Chinatown, San Francisco
By Edward Wilson Currier
Located in London, GB
'Chinatown, San Francisco', gouache on fine art paper, by Edward Wilson Currier (1903). Spofford Alley in San Francisco's Chinatown is best known for an address (number 36) where Dr. Sun Yat-Sen plotted the overthrow of China's last dynasty. During Prohibition, it was the site of turf battles over local bootlegging and protection rackets. Today it is lined with seniors' community centres. However, the quiet alley livens up in the evenings when a Chinese orchestra strikes up a tune, mah-jongg games begin with a cascade of clicking tiles, and barbers and florists use the pretence of sweeping their doorsteps to gossip. In this artist's depiction, a man smokes a long-stemmed Chinese pipe under the awning and colourful lanterns hanging from the wooden supports while a child looks on. The artwork is interesting from several standpoints including architectural, cultural and historical. Shortly after this work was painted, the neighbourhood was completely destroyed in the 1906 earthquake that levelled most of the city. From 1910 to 1940, Chinese immigrants were detained at the Angel Island...

In the Meadow, Springtime Dutch
By Cornelis Bouter
Located in Hillsborough, NC
Springtime, 'In the Meadow' by Cornelis Bouter (1888-1966) is a Dutch painting with figures and landscape in an impressionist style with early spring blossoms. Idyllic scene by a river under tree blossoms, this fine oil on canvas painting is very well presented in an original frame. Children play while mother peels apples in a pleasant afternoon setting. Bouter is known for his paintings of mother and children in interiors. This is one of one of his outdoor paintings in lighter color and lovely landscape. His paintings often depict domestic bliss with titles like ‘Contentment’ and ‘Happy Days’. His work has been sold by Christie’s and internationally.

Born in Oxford, England, he lived most of his life in the Eastern United States. He painted landscapes in New York, Connecticut, the American West, England, and France. He also painted portraits and drew illustrations.
Artistic career
Hamilton Hamilton was born in Oxford, England, on 1 April 1847. While young, he was a protégé of John Ruskin. In 1872, he began his mostly self-taught career as a portrait artist in Buffalo, New York. He moved to New York City in 1881 and shortly after began to practice genre painting and etching.[6] He became an associate member of the National Academy of Design in 1886 and a National Academician in 1889. Until the end of the century, he and his family resided alternately in upstate New York, Long Island, Colorado, and England.[6] In 1907 and 1908, Hamilton spent two years painting landscapes in Southern California. In 1912 he and his family permanently moved to Norwalk, Connecticut. There he became involved with the Silvermine group of artists led by Solon Borglum...
