William Lemos Art

American, b. 1861

William Lemos was born in New York on August 8, 1861. As a boy, Lemos earned money by wandering the streets and painting on request. Arriving in San Francisco in 1887, he established a studio at 106 Geary. With his wife Mabel, he worked in Los Angeles for a few years in the 1890s. After settling in Santa Cruz in 1896, he painted murals for many local businessmen. When the original Beach Casino was built there at the Boardwalk in 1904, Lemos was the first concessionaire and worked there for nearly 40 years. On his platform in the Casino, Lemos did paintings of redwoods, still lifes, forest fires, beach scenes, and marines. Many of his oils were done on redwood slabs, which were popular with the tourists; in the early days, these paintings sold for one dollar.

Antique Tonalist “English Fishing Boats” Marine Painting, by G. Martin

Located in San Francisco, CA

On offer is a classic 19th-century or early 20th-century marine painting that captures a serene, atmospheric scene of traditional maritime life. The work depicts a harbor or coastal waterway at dawn or dusk, with multiple gaff-rigged fishing vessels resting on calm waters. The central focus is a large, dark-sailed fishing boat, paired with a smaller rowboat carrying two silhouetted fishermen in the foreground. The piece utilizes a Tonalist style, relying on a narrow palette of muted ochre, brown, and dark gray tones to build depth. The warm, golden light piercing through the heavy, hazy skies creates a dramatic yet tranquil atmosphere. The soaring seagulls on the right add motion to an otherwise still, reflective seascape. The painting is housed in a massive, highly ornate Baroque or Rococo Revival gilt gesso frame. Measuring 3 inches deep, it features heavy scrollwork, acanthus leaves, and corner flourishes. The minor chips and exposed white gesso are common for authentic antique gesso frames...
