19th Century Bronze Sculpture of Joan of Arc by Adrien Étienne Gaudez, Signed
By Adrien Étienne Gaudez
Located in Tonbridge, Kent
19th Century Bronze Sculpture of Joan of Arc by Adrien Étienne Gaudez, Signed, 61.5 cm Description: This exceptional 19th-century bronze sculpture, titled Jeanne d’Arc portant son étendard (Joan of Arc Carrying Her Standard), is a masterful work by the renowned French sculptor Adrien Étienne Gaudez (1845-1902). Standing at an impressive 61.5 cm (24.2 inches) in height, this piece captures the heroic essence of Joan of Arc, also known as "The Maid of Orléans," in a dynamic and emotive composition. Gaudez depicts Joan of Arc in full armor, her right arm triumphantly raising a banner inscribed with intricate detailing, while her left hand gestures forward, symbolizing leadership and resolve. The flowing drapery of her skirt and the textured standard add a sense of movement, showcasing Gaudez’s meticulous attention to detail—a hallmark of his work often described as "photographic representationism." The sculpture is signed by the artist on the base, which also features a cartouche with the inscription "Jeanne d’Arc, 1894," adding historical context to this piece. Crafted during the late 19th century, a period when Joan of Arc was celebrated as a symbol of French patriotism, this sculpture reflects Gaudez’s skill in blending classical themes with the emerging Art Nouveau style. Gaudez, a pupil of François Jouffroy at the École des Beaux-Arts, was a celebrated sculptor who exhibited at the Paris Salon and won numerous accolades, including gold medals at the Exposition Universelle of 1889 and 1900. His works are held in prestigious collections worldwide, including museums in Valence, Louviers, and Clermont-Ferrand. Condition: The sculpture is in excellent condition for its age, with a rich, dark patina that enhances its intricate details. Minor wear consistent with age and use, including slight rubbing on the banner, which remains securely attached. The base is stable, with no significant damage or repairs noted. Dimensions: - Height: 61.5 cm (24.2 inches) - Base Diameter: 15 cm (5.9 inches) Provenance: Acquired from a private French estate, this piece has been carefully preserved and comes with a certificate of authenticity. Shipping: Global shipping available. The sculpture will be professionally packaged to ensure safe delivery. Please contact us for a shipping quote tailored to your location. French Bronze Sculpture "Young Molière" After Adrien-Etienne Gaudez & Susse
By Susse Fondeur, Adrien Étienne Gaudez
Located in Shippensburg, PA
A finely cast model of Jean-Baptiste Poquelin (French, 1622-1673), known as Molière, it is a wonderful historical study that captures the playwright and actor as a carefree youth. Reclined in a worn out chair, and judging by the worn out covering and loose fringe and gimp this is likely the chair he is supposed to be upholstering, the upholsterer's apprentice is spending his afternoon with a small book opened across his lap. He hasn't a care in the world, his tacking hammer held loosely in his hand as he is totally enveloped by the text. It captures Molière working for his father, who had purchased the post of valet de chambre...

“A Young Bladesmith” French Antique Bronze Sculpture by Adrien-Étienne Gaudez
By Adrien Étienne Gaudez
Located in Shippensburg, PA
An exceedingly well-cast model of a blacksmith's apprentice assessing a damaged sword, the technical precision of the foundry work is notable. There is a complexity to the lost-wax model that extends to the patination, utilizing a nearly gold in the flesh of the figure while employing a mixture of brown and coppery hues with hints of black in the garment and accessories. There is a studious seriousness in the thoughtful gaze of the young man as he rolls the wavy blade in his fingers. Strewn at his feet are the designs for another blade as well as a finished sword and a blacksmith's Hammer resting against the stone base for his oversized anvil; a pair of tongs are rested on the top of the anvil, as he leans against this to ponder his next project. The sculpture was cast by Usines Vojave in Bruxelles, the foundry mark cast into the stone base of the anvil along with the signature. Inordinately fine and precise, this is an intelligent and moving study of a young craftsman, a maker and designer. Adrien-Etienne Gaudez (French, 1845-1902) Born in Lyon in February of 1845, Adrien-Etienne Gaudez enrolled at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in 1862 where he studied under François Jouffroy. He debuted at the Paris Salon only two years later and continued exhibiting from 1864 through 1889, winning a third class medal at the Salon of 1884 and the first class medal in 1881. He was awarded the Legion d'Honneur in 1883. He also won gold medals at the Exposition Universelle of 1889 and 1900. Many of his works are held in major museums around the world including Valence, Louviers and Clermont-Ferrand.
