(after) Francis Bacon Art

British, 1909-1992
Francis Bacon (1909 – 1992) was an Irish-born British figurative painter well known for his bold figurative paintings and portraiture. His style is distinctive for his use of thick paint, energetic wide brushstrokes with half unmixed colors, bulbous forms and contorted, abstracted and even cubist features, lending an emotionally and psychologically complex expression. Bacon took up painting in his late 30s, having drifted as an interior decorator, "bon vivant" and gambler. He said that his artistic career was delayed because he spent too long looking for subject matter that could sustain his interest. His breakthrough came with the 1944 triptych Three Studies for Figures at the Base of a Crucifixion, which sealed his reputation as a uniquely bleak chronicler of the human condition. Amongst his common subjects were close friends and drinking companions, as well as crucifixions and popes. After his first solo show at Hanover Gallery in 1949, prominent English writer, painter and critic Wyndham Lewis wrote: "The Hanover Show is of exceptional importance. Of the younger painters none actually paints so beautifully as Francis Bacon. Bacon is one of the most powerful artists in Europe today and he is perfectly in tune with his time".

Flea, the Red Hot Chili Peppers bassist once said of Pettibon's Black Flag illustrations and iconic logo: "Before I knew what Black Flag was I remember walking around Hollywood and seeing Raymond's flyers and being like, 'What the fuck is that?'… Those flyers made me feel like something is going on and it's romantic and it's mysterious and it's heavy and I don't know what it is but I wanna know." About Raymond Pettibon (Americanb. 1957) Raymond Pettibon is a contemporary American artist known for his stylized ink drawings combining images and text. His inventive narratives blend historical content with consumer culture to yield incisive critiques of contemporary society. “I was making my work as transparent as possible, without equivocations, without calling attention to itself, without apology,” he explained. “There's a lot of conventions in the art world that are not to be transgressed, but my economy of means doesn't abide by those strictures.” Born Raymond Ginn on June 16, 1957 in Tucson, AZ, the artist is self-taught, but cites drawings by William Blake, Edward Hopper, Francisco Goya, and John Sloan as instructive to his practice. Deriving inspiration from comics, cartoons, and other pop culture iconography, Pettibon began designing album covers and ephemera for his brother’s band Black Flag in the mid-1970s. He went on to produce cover art for Sonic Youth, the Minutemen...

The emotional intensity of Francis Bacon’s work continues to inspire artists today. Bacon was a British painter and printmaker whose works are figurative, often contortive, and even somewhat disturbing. His goal was to create art that revealed what was behind the human facade and to evoke strong feelings in the viewer. Find a collection of Francis Bacon paintings and prints on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertOctober 30, 2024
How much a Francis Bacon painting is worth depends on its condition, size, history and other characteristics. In 2013, his piece Three Studies of Lucian Freud sold for more than $142 million at auction. At the time, it was the most expensive painting ever to be sold. Born in Dublin, Ireland, in 1909, the prominent British painter and printmaker created controversial art until his death in 1992. Bacon's oil paintings simultaneously repel and intrigue the viewer with their bold, grotesque figures. To obtain an estimated value for any Bacon piece you own, consult a certified appraiser or experienced art dealer. On 1stDibs, explore a selection of Francis Bacon art.
