Aleksandra Kasuba, "One Divided by One", Black Marble Mosaic, Signed

By Aleksandra Kasuba

Located in New York, NY

"One divided by One", by Aleksandra Kasuba, black marble mosaic, signed. A versatile environmental artist, Kasuba was born in Ginkunai, Lithuania, 1923 and died in New Mexico, March 5, 2019. She collaborated with furniture designer Vladimir Kagan in the early 1960s, embellishing his designs with tile mosaics. Still very active today with many projects and based in New Mexico, she told us via email in April 2018, that a major retrospective of her life's work was held in the fall of 2019 at the National Gallery in Vilnius, Lithuania. "One Divided by One" is from her 1966 breakout show at NYC's Grippi & Waddell Gallery (January 25 to February 12, 1966). The work is minimalist in nature and features a center of two parallel lines moving in opposite directions. Signed Aleksandra Kasuba and dated 1964 on verso. Retains original gallery label. According to her own account, this one-woman show, “Black Marble Mosaics,” at the Grippi Waddell Gallery, opened the doors to the commissions and public installations that followed. A PDF copy of Grippi & Waddell Gallery show is available upon request. Below is a short list of her public and private commissions: A 208 sq. ft. pebble mosaic...

Italian Black and White Carrara Marble Mosaic Tiles with Florentine Monuments

Located in Firenze, IT

In the present work small handcut tiles of pure white Carrara marble are the background of this interesting contemporary mosaic which represents one of the most celebrated landmark in Florence. The facade of the church of Santo Spirito (Holy Spirit), designed and built by Brunelleschi, is created with precious beige-colored Botticino marble tiles and surrounded by a frame of small black glass glazed paste tiles. Carrara and Botticino are among the most famous Tuscan marbles that’s why the local mosaic artist and craftswoman- who creates this superb work of art- decided that the mosaic featuring the most important symbol of Florence should be made of these materials. To make the composition more interesting, two different types of Carrara marble were used: the statuary white marble is matte and the white Carrara marble called "zuccherino" (sugary) is more sparkling. The random alternation of these two marbles give a pleasant vivid and three-dimensional effect to the entire mosaic tile. Each small rectangular and squared tesserae are hand cutted and each one of these mosaic is one of a kind. The mosaic plaque has a wood panel as support and the tile is housed in hand painted giltwood frame. The tile on sale and immediately available now is 15x15 cm and reproduces the church of Santo Spirito (Holy Spirit)- as you can see in the main image- but many other mosaic with the most important symbols and monuments of Florence are available as the Old Bridge, Santa Maria Novella, Florence's Cathedral with the Brunelleschi's dome or the Lily symbol of the city and so on, as showed in the photos. These white and black marble mosaic tiles...

1970s Mid-Century Modern Hand Carved Pottery Mosaic Sculpture by Louis Mendez

Located in Southampton, NJ

An early 1970s pottery landscape mosaic by celebrated artist and potter Louis Mendez. This piece was made by Mendez for a close friend of his that he met while taking a lithography class in Orange County, NY in 1973-74. Condition on the mosaic is fantastic. Biography of Louis Mendez copied from his namesake website. Louis Mendez: August 7, 1929 - July 27, 2012 Louis Mendez was born on the Lower East Side of Manhattan of Puerto Rican, Spanish and Irish heritage. He spent his early years in Spanish Harlem, where his family owned a restaurant at 108th and Madison. In the mid-1930s, his family sold the business and moved to Goshen, NY, where his high school teachers recognized his unusual talent in drawing and sculpture. Louis went on to earn BFA ('52) and MFA ('54) degrees from the New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred University. His years there were deeply formative, as he became a protégé and friend of Professors Charles Harder and Daniel Rhodes, influential authors and among the mid-century leaders of the American studio ceramics movement. While still a student at Alfred, Louis began driving into Manhattan with a trunk full of his newly minted pottery...
