Alfred Reth Art

Hungarian, 1884-1966
Born Alfred Roth February 29, 1884 in Budapest and died in September 1966 in Paris was a Hungarian painter, naturalized French, considered one of the main figures of the Avant-garde and the School of Paris. Is the eighth child of a modest Hungarian family. At the end of his schooling, he became a bank employee, as his father wished. From his childhood, Alfréd got to know István Farkas and László Mednyánszky. He befriends the first and the second teaches him to paint. This is where his interest in Buddhism and oriental art was born. In 1903, he binds with the colony of painters of Nagybánya and begins to work under the direction of Károly Ferenczy. In 1905, he left for Paris with József Egry. In France, he worked in the studio of J. E. Blanche in Montmartre. He met the orientalist Jean Buchot through Mednyánszky and developed his interest in Hindu and Khmer art which he discovered at the Musée Guimet. He discovered Cézanne at Ambroise Vollard then at the Salon d'Automne in 1907; he did not join the Fauve group but was part of the cubist movement from 1911. He exhibited 3 paintings at the Salon des Indépendants, hung between those of Matisse and Rouault, and reiterated in 1911: his paintings rubbed shoulders with those of Braque, to whom he would be close later, Léger, Lhote, Metzinger, de Segonzac. He is one of the many so-called painters of the School of Paris. In 1913, he was invited to participate in an exhibition devoted to Cubism in Berlin by the Galerie der Sturm, where he represented French contemporary art with 80 paintings and drawings. Also in 1913, his works were presented in Budapest during a Cubist exhibition. In 1914, with the outbreak of the First World War, he was interned as a citizen of a country enemy of France. The end of the war marked the beginning of the Roaring Twenties, the return of foreign collectors and their large purchases of modern works, an intense, creative and worldly life in a Paris that wanted to compete with Berlin. He is one of the first to embark on the path of abstraction, in the 1920s his paintings are games of lines and planes, curves and strangely figurative. Member of the Abstraction group - creation: Non-figurative art in 1931 with Arp, Georges Valmier, Herbin, Kupka, etc. whose goal is to disseminate abstract art and organize exhibitions, which will be active until 1936. In 1946, after the Second World War, the Salon des Réalités Nouvelles is formed with which he will exhibit. At the end of his life, Réth will always be in the abstract movement, but he will also return to figuration and the collages he had started in 1906, with paper and adding collage of colored printed fabrics. The materials that captivated him then were a major axis in his work until 1960. The year of his death in 1966, it was in Chicago that a retrospective was given to him.

John Hatch American Cubist Abstract Oil Painting 1950's Mid C Fantasy Abstract
By John W. Hatch
Located in Buffalo, NY
An original oil on board painting by American modernist John W. Hatch. This incredible cubist painting was created in the 1950's. Estate stamped on the reverse. The painting comes housed in a modern black frame presentation. John Woodsum Hatch 1919-1998 During his fifty-year career as an artist, John Woodsum Hatch explored the people, the landscape, and the seascape around him. From his extensive travels to his years in New Hampshire, he developed a body of work that captures a sense of place. Through watercolor, ink and sand, he depicted the grandeur of the White Mountains. The crisp light and distinct topography of the Isles of Shoals and Great Bay Estuary are precisely and clearly documented in acrylic and tempera paintings. His ability to convey the sheer scale and longevity of the mountains and sea, and by comparison the fleeting nature of human life, conveys in a not-so-subtle way that the natural environment is to be revered and preserved. Hatch took his first teaching job at the University of New Hampshire in 1949, the same year he graduated from Yale University. He never left. A former student, Sam Cady, described his contributions: “He was a wonderful mix of jokester and sage. A teacher who obviously loved people, loved teaching, and had a great gift for it.” After retiring in 1985, he was made an honorary Professor Emeritus at UNH. Hatch contributed to New Hampshire's cultural life in three areas: his teaching, his art, and his community service. His effectiveness in these three areas can be traced his commitment to give something of himself to help others. Many artists teach by necessity and resent it as a drain on their creative energies but Hatch found his greatest fulfillment from a combination of teaching, making art, and being deeply involved with his community as an art historian and as an environmentalist. Hatch’s work can be seen in numerous public collections, including: the Addison Gallery of American Art; DeCordova Museum; Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts; State of New Hampshire's Living Treasures Collection, and the Portland Museum of Art in Maine. John Woodsum Hatch, New Hampshire's 1997 Living Treasure Award recipient, died on August 6, 1998, at the age of 78. Hatch was a draftsman, an artist and a muralist. His works can be found in public and private collections throughout the region. He exhibited at the New Hampshire Art...

Spirit
By William Y. Cooper
Located in Buffalo, NY
"Spirit" a bold and thoughtful cubist oil on canvas was painted in December of 2001 by African American artist William (Bill) Cooper. William Y. Cooper was a writer, painter, muralist, illustrator, and art teacher. He moved to Western New York in 1954 from Birmingham, Alabama, to pursue work, and Buffalo has been his home ever since. In 1975, he received his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the University at Buffalo; he was also a state certified art teacher. Cooper woked primarily in oils and acrylics, but also creates drawings on paper. He has painted several commissioned murals and has had more than fifteen one-man shows in Western New York and Ghana, West Africa, and has participated in more than twenty-five group exhibitions since he began his professional career in 1969. His paintings and drawings address both his African heritage and his experience as an American through symbolism and metaphor. He observes, “I am an Afrocentric artist. My worldview is rooted in an African frame of reference and a deep, abiding sense of the creator from whence I draw my inspiration, strength, and a sense of who I am. The use of symbols allows me to explore literal ideas.” Among Cooper’s published works are two children’s books, 77 Jackson Street, Rear and Nakai and the Red Shoes, and a novel for adults, The Mopane Tree. Cooper founded the Afrocentric Artists’ Collective and ran the organization from 1979 to 1981. In 2013 he was designated a “Living Legacy” artist by the Burchfield Penney Arts Center, the latest in a series of honors which has also included awards from the Arts Council of Buffalo & Erie County, the New York State Council on the Arts, and Alpha Kappa Alpha...
