A sculptural mid-century valet stand in solid beech, made in France in the 1960s. It is a small masterpiece of quiet, functional design: genuinely useful for laying out tomorrow's clothes, and a lovely sculptural object in its own right. Design At the top is a smoothly rounded, gable-shaped hanger for a jacket or shirt. Below it runs a horizontal rail for trousers, a tie or a belt, and at the bottom a slatted shelf for shoes rests on gently curved, sled-like feet. The rounded, softly shaped parts give the silhouette an organic, almost playful quality, and the honey-toned beech has a warm original patina. At 142 cm tall, it has real presence in a room without taking up much floor space. Condition Warm original patina with light surface scratches and minor cosmetic wear consistent with age and use. The wood is stable, the joints are sound and the stand is solid. No repairs, replacements or restorations noted. Please see the photos for details. Dimensions: height 142 cm, width 48 cm, depth 36 cm. Where it works Place it in a bedroom next to the wardrobe, in a dressing room, in a guest room or in a hallway for coats and bags. The slim, vertical form fits even a compact bedroom or dressing area, and it works just as well as a decorative object in a corner. The honey-coloured beech pairs beautifully with brass accents, bouclé upholstery, linen and a graphic rug. Style references The valet stand belongs to the tradition of mid-century bedroom furniture that combined function and sculptural form. Think of the famous Valet Chair by Hans Wegner and the valet stands produced in Scandinavia and France in the 1950s and 1960s. It suits a mid-century modern, Scandinavian, Japandi or warm, layered traditional interior, and it will appeal to lovers of well-made functional objects with sculptural character.
