Spirit
By William Y. Cooper
Located in Buffalo, NY
"Spirit" a bold and thoughtful cubist oil on canvas was painted in December of 2001 by African American artist William (Bill) Cooper. William Y. Cooper was a writer, painter, muralist, illustrator, and art teacher. He moved to Western New York in 1954 from Birmingham, Alabama, to pursue work, and Buffalo has been his home ever since. In 1975, he received his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the University at Buffalo; he was also a state certified art teacher. Cooper woked primarily in oils and acrylics, but also creates drawings on paper. He has painted several commissioned murals and has had more than fifteen one-man shows in Western New York and Ghana, West Africa, and has participated in more than twenty-five group exhibitions since he began his professional career in 1969. His paintings and drawings address both his African heritage and his experience as an American through symbolism and metaphor. He observes, “I am an Afrocentric artist. My worldview is rooted in an African frame of reference and a deep, abiding sense of the creator from whence I draw my inspiration, strength, and a sense of who I am. The use of symbols allows me to explore literal ideas.” Among Cooper’s published works are two children’s books, 77 Jackson Street, Rear and Nakai and the Red Shoes, and a novel for adults, The Mopane Tree. Cooper founded the Afrocentric Artists’ Collective and ran the organization from 1979 to 1981. In 2013 he was designated a “Living Legacy” artist by the Burchfield Penney Arts Center, the latest in a series of honors which has also included awards from the Arts Council of Buffalo & Erie County, the New York State Council on the Arts, and Alpha Kappa Alpha...

John Hatch American Cubist Abstract Oil Painting 1950's Mid C Fantasy Abstract
By John W. Hatch
Located in Buffalo, NY
An original oil on board painting by American modernist John W. Hatch. This incredible cubist painting was created in the 1950's. Estate stamped on the reverse. The painting comes housed in a modern black frame presentation. John Woodsum Hatch 1919-1998 During his fifty-year career as an artist, John Woodsum Hatch explored the people, the landscape, and the seascape around him. From his extensive travels to his years in New Hampshire, he developed a body of work that captures a sense of place. Through watercolor, ink and sand, he depicted the grandeur of the White Mountains. The crisp light and distinct topography of the Isles of Shoals and Great Bay Estuary are precisely and clearly documented in acrylic and tempera paintings. His ability to convey the sheer scale and longevity of the mountains and sea, and by comparison the fleeting nature of human life, conveys in a not-so-subtle way that the natural environment is to be revered and preserved. Hatch took his first teaching job at the University of New Hampshire in 1949, the same year he graduated from Yale University. He never left. A former student, Sam Cady, described his contributions: “He was a wonderful mix of jokester and sage. A teacher who obviously loved people, loved teaching, and had a great gift for it.” After retiring in 1985, he was made an honorary Professor Emeritus at UNH. Hatch contributed to New Hampshire's cultural life in three areas: his teaching, his art, and his community service. His effectiveness in these three areas can be traced his commitment to give something of himself to help others. Many artists teach by necessity and resent it as a drain on their creative energies but Hatch found his greatest fulfillment from a combination of teaching, making art, and being deeply involved with his community as an art historian and as an environmentalist. Hatch’s work can be seen in numerous public collections, including: the Addison Gallery of American Art; DeCordova Museum; Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts; State of New Hampshire's Living Treasures Collection, and the Portland Museum of Art in Maine. John Woodsum Hatch, New Hampshire's 1997 Living Treasure Award recipient, died on August 6, 1998, at the age of 78. Hatch was a draftsman, an artist and a muralist. His works can be found in public and private collections throughout the region. He exhibited at the New Hampshire Art...

Amédée Ozenfant - La tornade au coucher du soleil, modern, surreal, french
By Amédée Ozenfant
Located in London, GB
Amédée Ozenfant (1886-1966) La tornade au coucher du soleil c.1966 oil on canvas 100 x 80 cm signed ‘ozenfant’ (lower right); titled and numbered ‘La tornade au coucher du soleil 844’ (on the verso) Price: £35,000 GBP Provenance: Galerie Katia Granoff, Cannes Private collection, France (by descent) Literature: This work will be included in the forthcoming catalogue raisonné by Pierre Guénégan. Notes: Amédée Ozenfant was a French cubist painter and writer, responsible for founding the 20th century art movement Purism with Charles-Edouard Jeanneret (known as Le Corbusier). Together they set out the theory behind Purism in the 1918 publication Apres le Cubisme. The manifesto emphasised the purity of the geometric and simplified forms that made up mechanical and technological subject-matter. Purism was formed as a rejection of Cubism in that it urged for the return to recognisable forms. Born in 1886 in Saint-Quentin, France, Ozenfant began his career attending L'École Municipale de Dessin Quentin-La Tour in his hometown, before moving to Paris around 1907 to study architecture and painting at the Académie de la Palette. Here he befriended artist Roger de La Fresnaye and his artistic style became more abstract as he explored the importance of colour. Ozenfant was greatly influenced by Futurism and Neo-Impressionism and was a great admirer of the work of Paul Signac with their bold colours, brightness and harmony. Ozenfant's first solo exhibition was held at the Salon de la Nationale in Paris in 1908. Two years later, he contributed works to the Salon d'Automne. From 1909 until 1913, Ozenfant took trips across Russia, Italy, Belgium and the Netherlands while also attending the Collège de France in Paris. As well as the creation of Purism, Ozenfant founded the magazine L'Elan which he edited from 1915-1917. Ozenfant began to teach in 1929 and three years later founded the Académie Ozenfant in Paris. He later moved to London where he operated began the Ozenfant Academy until 1938 when he moved to New York and established the Ozenfant School of Fine Arts until 1955. He then returned to France where he died in 1966. His works are including in major public collections including the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York, the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., and the Tate Gallery in London.
