Born in 1955 in Sfax, Tunisia, and holding a Master’s degree in Fine Arts (Maîtrise d'Arts plastiques) from the University of Montpellier (France), André Debono approaches antique patinas not merely as a decorative trade, but as a genuine art form. Based in the historic city of Nîmes, his forty-year immersion in historical surface finishes is intrinsically linked to his practice as an abstract art painter: for Debono, aged furniture is a three-dimensional support where matter, oxidation, and sedimented time are orchestrated with the eye and intuition of an artist.For decades, working closely with prominent antique dealers who required absolute material veracity, Debono has mastered the most demanding ancestral recipes: rabbit-skin glue (colle de peau), natural chalk grounds, raw mineral pigments, and hand-buffed wax. Yet his intervention goes far beyond technical execution. Counted among a limited circle of perhaps two or three figures in France capable of achieving such depth, he approaches every surface as a painter does a canvas: building successive layers, mastering chemical abrasions, and embracing the accidental markings of matter to recreate the true soul of centuries-old finishes.
Debono applies this painterly mastery to bespoke furniture pieces, giving a second life to carefully chosen classic and style furniture, all at least a century old. Rather than fabricating new frames, he intervenes directly on these authentic, aged wooden structures, transfiguring them through his signature patinas. The result offers collectors and interior designers not merely restored objects, but sculptural works that unite the nobility of centenarian cabinetmaking with a deeply tactile, artistic presence.
