Andrew McCallum Art

Scottish, 1821-1902

Andrew McCallum was born in Nottingham but hailed from the Scottish Highland. He was the son of an employee at the William Gibson & Sons Ltd. in Nottingham. An interest in drawing was encouraged by Thomas Bailey, who allowed him to copy pictures in his collection. On his 21st birthday, McCallum left home and maintained himself by teaching. Aged 22, he became a student in the recently founded Nottingham School of Art. He exhibited at the British Institution in 1849. About this time, he became a student at the Government School of Design at Somerset House. In 1850, McCallum first exhibited at the Royal Academy of Arts. From that year till 1852, he was an assistant master at the Manchester School of Art. In 1854, McCallum went to Italy with a traveling studentship. Part of his time was spent on mural decorations; returning to England in 1857, he decorated the western exterior of the Sheepshanks Gallery at the South Kensington Museum with panels. McCallum then concentrated on landscape, with subjects at Burnham Beeches and Windsor Forest. Towards the end of 1861, McCallum painted at Fontainbleau. In 1864, he worked in Switzerland and on the River Rhine; in 1866, he was in Italy; in the winter of 1866–67, he was in the neighborhood of Paris. Between 1870–75, he paid several visits to Egypt. About 1875, he was commissioned by Queen Victoria to paint five views near Balmoral. He sometimes lectured on art subjects. McCallum died on 22 January 1902 at 5 The Studios, Holland Park Road, London and had lived in the neighborhood.

Evening Twilight on River 1899 Scandinavian Oil Painting on Canvas Signed Framed
Located in Stockholm, SE
Evening twilight on the river - is a painting in which the light of a beautiful sunset merges with the mysterious waters of the river. This artwork immerses us in the atmosphere of a quiet and calm evening, when the sun is already setting behind the horizon, and the sky is painted in various shades of orange, yellow and pink. The trees, slowly plunging into darkness, add a special mystery to this landscape. The reflection of heavenly light and trees on the surface of the river creates a feeling of soft tonal shimmer. A lonely house...

Windmill and Shepherd Boy Landscape Collaboration Two Famous Norwegian Artists
Located in Stockholm, SE
Сollaboration work by two Norwegian artists: Morten Müller (1828 - 1911) and Olaf Christopher Dahl (1842 - 1895). Painted approximately in late 19th century (ca. 1870 - 1880). The collaboration of two renowned Norwegian artists in this landscape is an example of the fusion of their talent and skill. A very interesting compositional solution, where among the hills buried in vegetation, a lowland with a small pond is depicted, where a young shepherd has brought his cow to the watering hole. In the distance, on the hill, a windmill is visible, creating an emphasis on the perspective and depth of the composition. The nuanced interplay of light and shadow adds of complexity to the scene. The calmness of the pastoral setting below contrasts markedly with presence of gloomy clouds looming above. This juxtaposition creates a harmonious balance, presenting a duality inherent in nature. And this rare and awesome work of art should be considered for museum collection as well. Both painters presented in National Museum Oslo, Norway. Size app.: 46 x 69 cm (roughly 18.1 x 27.2 in), with frame 60 x 84 cm cm (roughly 23.6 x 33.1 in). Good condition with wear, tiny losses to paint in minor areas and craquelure. So it needs minor care and conservation. Please study good resolution images for overall cosmetic condition. In person actual painting may appear darker or brighter than in our pictures, strictly depending on sufficient light in your environment. Weight of app. 4.4 kg is going to measure some 6 kg volume weight packed for shipment. Morten Müller began his art studies with Adolph Tidemand and Hans Gude in Düsseldorf, Germany, from 1847 to 1848. From 1850 he was again a student at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf, with Johann Wilhelm Schirmer as a teacher. From 1850 to 1851, Müller painted with the Swedish landscape painter Marcus...

"Being There" Original Oil Painting by Robert White, Frameless Display
Located in Encino, CA
“Being There,” an original oil on canvas by Robert K. White, is a piece for the true collector. White’s careful attention to detail and vivid use of browns and reds project from the painting, immediately capturing the viewer's attention and highlighting the artist's keen ability to capture emotion and life - all in a brushstroke. White's talent for depicting light and shadow provides the foundation for him to deliver subjects and scenes to the viewer's eye. This masterful work would make a great addition to an art collection and enhance most any home, perfect for those who have an affinity for cityscapes, theater, and architecture. In the artist’s own words, “I don’t paint what is inside of me; I paint what I see outside of me. I’m an observer. If I see something and I feel an affinity for it, something just clicks in my head. I’ll make the decision right then and there to paint that particular subject during that particular moment. It’s a perfect moment. Once something has caught my eye and I’ve heard the “perfect” click, it’s like a photograph has been taken in my mind’s eye. I only have a few days of clarity with that image. I have to start the painting quickly or else it will be gone and I will lose that image forever.” Artist: ROBERT KENNETH WHITE...
