Andrew Shunney was born in Attleboro, Massachusetts and studied at the Rhode Island School of Design. He later studied under Diego Rivera and then moved to Paris for inspiration in the work of French Impressionists. Summering on Nantucket from the early 1950s until his death, Shunney had a studio on Straight Wharf and also exhibited at the Lobster Pot Gallery. Shunney was also well known in the Palm Beach art scene where he wintered. He was a mainstay of the Nantucket Art Colony in the 1960s and 70s and is generally regarded as the iconic artist of that fertile period on-island.
