Swedish, 1862-1945
Anselm Schultzberg was a highly accomplished Post-Impressionist landscape painter; born in Sweden he attended the Academy of Fine Arts in Stockholm. In common with many Swedish artists Schultzberg travelled throughout Europe to further his artistic education including to Italy and France, visiting many of the major artist colonies such as Moret and Grez in 1890. In Paris he achieved notable success, exhibiting at the Salon des Artistes Francais, as well as winning awards at the Exposition Universelles of 1889 and 1891. Schultzberg won medals in Chicago 1893 and he was awarded a medal for the arrangement of the Swedish exhibition at the World Trade Show in Saint Louis in 1904. Schultzberg often served as commissioner for the Swedish Art Department at international exhibitions, including Rome 1911 and San Francisco in 1915. He became a member of the Academy of Arts in 1900. Today Anshelm Schultzberg’s work is represented at, among others, the Gothenburg Art Museum, the National Museum in Stockholm and Kalmar Art Museum.
