Arthur Wardle

British, 1864-1949

Arthur Wardle was a British artist and animalier painter. His prolific oeuvre focused on his fascination with dogs of various breeds, creating rich, naturalistic paintings of domestic pets and hunting animals captured in moments of lifelike movement. His work is characterized by its high degree of realism and is representative of the 19th-century interest in detailed artistic representations of animals. Born in 1860 in London, England, Wardle notably began exhibiting his work at age 16 at the Royal Academy. He began his career by sketching cattle near the Thames river, and would frequently depict exotic wildlife by studying them at the London Zoo and then transposing them onto local landscapes. Wardle was widely appreciated and acclaimed for his paintings, garnering inclusion among the Pastel Society in 1911 and the Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours in 1922. Wardle died on July 16, 1949, in London, England, and his legacy lives on through his images' reproduction on commercial products like chocolate boxes, posters, calendars, and postcards. Today, the artist’s work can be found amongst the collections of the London-based Tate Modern, Leeds City Museum and The Kennel Club.

"Still Life" by Cornelis Le Mair 31 x 24 inch Oil on Board
By Cornelis Le Mair
Located in Atlanta, GA
Item is in excellent condition and has only been displayed in a gallery setting. Item includes frame; framed dimensions are approximately 31 x 38 inches. Cornelis le Mair is truly a renaissance man, encompassing all disciplines of the arts. He enjoys painting, drawing, writing, architecture, sculpture, and interior design. Le Mair was born in Eindhoven, The Netherlands in 1944. He began drawing and painting at the young age of five and while in kindergarten, he was often made to show his paintings in other classes even though he was shy about doing so. “When I could not play outside because of bad weather, I would sit in my bedroom and would draw.” His early art studies were widely influenced by the Rembrandt exhibit in the Rijksmuseum (1956) that he attended with his father. There le Mair was inspired by the Old Masters and “the desire to unravel all the mysteries hidden under the cracked varnish” began. Already having painted a lifesize copy of “The Nightwatch” on the wall of his bedroom, le Mair was continually driven by the Rembrandt exhibit. He began to experiment with resins, pigments and oils in order to hone and perfect the technique of the old masters. He studied drawings and paintings and early on developed the feeling of color and composition. After completing high school, he worked for a short period as a designer of woven fabrics. Although his heart desired to paint, he enjoyed having a pencil and brush in hand and a case full of art books and says, “This treasure of inspiring information took me further on track to the traditional trade.” At this same time, le Mair’s artistic endeavors led him to learn the art of music. First learning to play the guitar from friends, he began performing at youth centers. This love of music expanded into him learning to play the mandolin, turning lye, banjo, and bagpipes. Just after his eighteenth birthday, le Mair was accepted into military service where his lack of conforming led him to a maximum solitary confinement sentence. After a month in training, the army physician and le Mair agreed that he was born to be an artist and released le Mair from military services. Once he returned home, with the encouragement from his parents, le Mair began his art schooling at the Art Academy (Kustacademie) in ‘s-Hertogenbosch, The Netherlands. There he found that the school was geared for modernism and after painting a portrait of a fellow classmate, his teachers advised le Mair to look for a school where the traditional ideas were still taught. Longing to study the classical arts, he applied and was accepted to the Academy of Fine Arts (Koninklijke Kunstacademie) in Antwerp, Belgium in 1965. After studying under Professor Victor Dolphijn, le Mair graduated cum laude in portrait and figure paintings in 1968. He was then promoted to study as a student of the Higher Institute, a structure at a higher university level where he studied under Rik Slabbinck...

Near the finish, 1885
By Arthur Wardle
Located in Sutton Poyntz, Dorset
This original oil painting by Arthur Wardle, dated 1885, is presented and supplied in a mid 20th century frame. The frame dimensions are 62.5cm high x 87cm wide. The visible painting dimensions are 49cm high x 74cm wide (19.29inches high x 29.13inches wide). The painted surfaces and canvas have benefitted from some restoration including two small hole repairs, cleaning and conservation, which took place in 2017 on our instructions. The repairs are permanent and have been professionally performed by a recognized conservation restorer. The repairs are not visible from the front but are evident on the rear. The painting is signed and dated lower left. Arthur Wardle was a highly successful artist whose works continue to be sought after and have been widely reproduced on postcards, books, cigarette cards, calendars and even boxes of chocolates. He also produced the famous WW1 recruitment poster ‘The Empire needs Men!’. He was largely self-taught and received no academic training, yet became one of the pre-eminent animal and sporting painters of his generation. He is particularly well-known for his paintings of dogs. Born in London, Wardle was just sixteen when he had his first piece displayed at the Royal Academy. This was a study of cattle by the River Thames, and was a good indication of what was to be a lifelong interest in painting animals. He painted a variety of animal subjects with equal skill but his work may be divided into mythical, domestic and exotic. He visited London zoo regularly where he would tirelessly sketch on the spot studies of exotic animals and birds from overseas, such as elephants, leopards, polar bears and tigers, and these would prove highly inspirational and significant subjects for his large mythological scenes, which basically sealed his reputation as an outstanding animal artist as well as a painter of historical subjects. His sporting scenes are now particularly valued. He is considered equally proficient in oils, watercolours and pastels. In 1880 Wardle lived in Oakley Square, Camden, but artistic success enabled him to move to the more fashionable 34 Alma Square in St John's Wood by 1892. By 1936 Wardle had moved to West London. Wardle was elected to the Pastel Society in 1911 and became a member of the Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours in 1922. In 1931 he held his first one-man exhibition at the Fine Art Society and in 1935 the Vicar’s Gallery put on an exhibition of his work. He exhibited 21 works at the Royal Academy from 1880-1935, and more than 100 up to 1936. He also exhibited at the other principal British galleries and in Paris. Wardle undertook many commissions for owners of pure bred dogs. Among Wardle’s best-known dog paintings are those he completed for the owner of the famous d’Orsay Smooth Fox Terrier...
