Bird of Paradise and Amaryllis by Augusta Withers. London, circa 1830. Original watercolor on artist's board. Mrs. Augusta Innes Withers (active 1826-1865) exhibited at the Royal Academy in London from 1829 to 1846, was a member of the Society of Lady Artists and was appointed flower painter to Queen Adelaide in 1833 and flower and fruit painter to Queen Victoria in 1864. Three of her paintings are in the Natural History Museum of London, and a large number of her original watercolors are held in the Lindley Library of the Royal Horticultural Society. Wilfred Blunt writes: "...Mrs. Withers and Miss Drake deserve a high place among the artists who contributed to these handsome publications.
