Auguste-François Laby (1784–1860) was a distinguished French painter and lithographer celebrated for his refined portraiture and historical compositions. Born in Paris, Laby honed his craft under the tutelage of the renowned Neoclassical master Jacques-Louis David, an influence visible in the disciplined technique and realistic precision of his work. He built a prestigious reputation capturing the likenesses of the 19th-century French elite, securing commissions to paint notables such as King Louis XVIII and King Charles X. Beyond his official court portraiture and religious paintings, Laby is also recognized for his detailed lithographs, including topographic views of international landscapes. Today, his works are collected by major institutions, such as the Yale Center for British Art, and remain prized for their academic excellence and capturing the elegant spirit of their era.
