Bernard Heesen Furniture
Bernard Heesen is among Holland’s most appreciated contemporary glass artists. He was educated as an architect and is a self-taught glass artist. Born in 1958 near Leerdam as the son of famous glass artist Willem Heesen, he grew up in this very creative environment. After his formal education and studies at the Delft University of Technology, Bernard started to assist his father in his glassworks De Oude Horn, a former 18th-century water pumping station part of the Dutch Defense System. In 1995, Bernard Heesen took over management from his father of the glassworks. He worked together with famous other glass-artists like Andries Copier, Maria Roosen and Tony Cragg. His works are part of numerous collections, among others.

Maria Bang Espersen works around the idea that all things are malleable, like glass, and that nothing can be permanently defined. Her experimental sculptures are therefore not only an approach but also a statement; one that states to never get caught up in the restrictive norms or to obey established hierarchies. Essentially, her works in glass, are a play with the possibilities of the material and an attempt to expand the viewer’s understanding of her chosen medium.
Although static and solid in their final sate, Espersen stretches, pulls and bends her glass, resulting in works that appear soft and almost possible of languid movement. Her chosen candy confectionery colour palette entices and draws the onlooker towards the artwork, which deliciously glisten.
