Collectible Line Vautrin Gilt Bronze Brooch, c. 1945

By Line Vautrin

Located in New York, NY

A collectible gilt-bronze brooch showing a sunlit lion was designed by pioneering French woman jeweler Line Vautrin, France, circa 1945. It is a small but mighty piece weighing 27.72 grams and signed “LV.” Vautrin’s brooch makes the perfect gift for a partner or a unique addition to an artist’s jewelry aficionado’s collection. Born into a family of metal founders, even as a small child Line Vautrin (1913-1997) was fascinated by her father’s business. She never received a formal art education, but by the time she was 14, she had mastered the skills of casting, chasing, and gilding bronze. At 15, she hit upon the novel concept of making artistic jewelry in gilt metal. She began to sell pieces almost immediately; Vautrin devoted herself to experimentation with new materials then and, indeed, throughout her career but remained committed to bronze. In a time when few women played such a role, she was a pioneering craftswoman known for highly original jewelry enveloped in wordplay and symbology. The turning point came when she hired a stand at the Paris International Exposition...

Retro 1950s Diamond Ruby Large Bouquet Brooch in 18K Gold & Platinum

Located in Dallas, TX

Elegant retro brooch modelled in the form of an enchanting flower bouquet of shimmering gold leaves, glowing ruby flower buds, and glittering diamond accents. The central part of the brooch is rendered in 18 karat yellow gold which is also the setting for approximately 5 carats of oval and marquise shape rubies. An estimated 2 carats of sparkling round-brilliant cut diamonds are set in complimenting platinum. The gold and platinum leaves are crafted in eye-catching sculptural detail and there is a wonderful three-dimensional quality to the brooch. The vibrant color-contrast of sparkling white diamonds and fiery red rubies, as well as that of warm yellow gold and cool platinum, gives this brooch a special liveliness and charm. The brooch silhouette is stylishly elongated and it is lavishly sized at 2.8in (7cm) length and 1in (2.5cm) width. It is in very good condition and features a single-pin backing with the safety-catch. The brooch dates to the highly collectible retro 1950s era and is of French design. The brooch is dressy and elegant and radiates with easy-going vintage...

To identify Arts and Crafts furniture, first see if you can locate a maker's mark on your piece. By researching any marks using trusted online resources, you can determine who produced your piece and find out if the maker was linked with the Arts and Crafts movement. Some notable makers associated with the style include William Morris and Philip Webb. If you can't find a maker's mark, examine the details of your piece. The Arts and Crafts movement began as a reaction to mass production, highlighting craftsmanship, raw materials and simple design. Due to its handcrafted origins, Arts and Crafts furniture often displays tool marks and slight variations in carvings and details. Pieces so regular that they seem machine-made are less likely to be Arts and Crafts furniture. Other common characteristics of Arts and Crafts pieces include inlaid and carved details and natural wood materials with visible grains. Chairs often feature reclining or angled backs and armrests. If you'd like assistance determining whether a particular piece is Arts and Crafts, consider consulting a certified appraiser or experienced antique dealer. On 1stDibs, explore a range of Arts and Crafts furniture.

The craft of painting enamel on glass is called enameling. Because regular paint would simply wash off glass, the artisan uses enamel and fires it into the glass once they have painted the design. Browse a range of enameled glass pieces on 1stDibs.

To identify Arts and Crafts furniture, look for characteristics that are hallmarks of the style. The Arts and Crafts movement began as a reaction to mass production, highlighting craftsmanship, raw materials and simple design. Makers working in this style placed an emphasis on natural motifs and adorned their pieces with simple flourishes like mosaics and carvings. This work is characterized by plain construction that showcases the hand of the artisan. Arts and Crafts furniture was often built from sturdy woods like oak and mahogany while featuring details such as inlaid metal, tooled leather and ceramic tiles. The style in the United States was led by Gustav Stickley, whose clean-lined chairs and benches showcased the grain of the wood, and furniture maker Charles Rohlfs, who was informed by international influences like East Asian and French Art Nouveau design. If you need help identifying the style of your furniture, a certified appraiser or knowledgeable antique dealer can be of assistance. Find a diverse assortment of Arts and Crafts furniture on 1stDibs.
