David Bates b.1840 Art

British, 1840-1921
David Bates was an English landscape artist who painted in oils and watercolour. He was born in Cambridge, and from 1855 worked as a porcelain painter at the Royal Worcester porcelain works in Worcester - where he came to specialise in painting flowers. He left his employment there in 1880 to become a full-time professional painter. Bates was an "open-air" rural landscape artist, painting in the Midlands, Scotland and Wales, and abroad in Switzerland and Egypt. His work shows the influence of Benjamin Williams Leader, Joseph Thors and Samuel Henry Baker, and Bates is associated in style with the Birmingham School of artists. Bates exhibited many works at the Royal Academy, Grosvenor Gallery, Royal Society of British Artists and the New Watercolour Society in London, and at the Royal Birmingham Society of Artists. His works are currently on display in Liverpool museum, Worcester City Museum, and several other art galleries.

David Bates British, (1840-1921) The Plough Team, Bredon’s Norton Oil on canvas, signed & dated 1908, further inscribed verso Image size: 15.5 inches x 23.5 inches Size including frame: 21.5 inches x 29.5 inches A lovely landscape painting of a plough team on a country track near Bredon’s Norton by David Bates. Bredon’s Norton is a village located in the Cotswolds, on the slopes of Bredon Hill in South Worcestershire. The America women’s rights activist Victoria Woodhull Martin moved to the village in 1901 and by 1908 had set up an agricultural school for women at her Norton’s Park estate. The Antarctic explore Raymond Priestley also lived there. Although Bates was living in Surrey at the time of this painting, he would have been familiar with the area after having lived and worked in Worcestershire for some considerable time. He would have also most likely been aware of Victoria Woodhull Martin and the school. David Bates was born in March, Cambridge in 1840 to Benjamin Bates a shoe maker and Sarah Bates. The Boat in Martigues, France

By Marie-Anne Nivoulies de Pierrefort

Located in London, GB

'The Boat in Martigues', oil on canvas, by Marie de Nivouliès de Pierrefort (circa 1910). Martigues is a small port town just northwest of Marseille in the South of France. Its nickname is the Provençal Venice. Further eastward down the coast is the town of Toulon where the artist was born in 1879. Nivouliès depicts a charming sailboat tied to the small pier yet with an unfurled sail. It looks to be a wondrous day along the Mediterranean, the kind we can always dream about. The painting is over one hundred years old and is in fair condition, yet recently brought back to life by an art restoration professional. Elegantly framed, it is stabilised now for decades into the future. Signed by the artist on the lower right corner. Please enjoy the many photos accompanying the listing. Upon request, a video may be provided of the artwork. About the Artist: Although she was a direct descendant of the counts of de Pierrefort, Marie de Nivouliès de Pierrefort's (1879-1968) family was very poor. In spite of the poverty, Pierrefort attended a Catholic school run by nuns, obtaining a scholarship from the School of Fine Arts of Paris. While still a student, she attended workshops of great Impressionist masters such as Pierre Auguste Renoir (1841-1919) and Pierre Bonnard (1867-1947). In 1910 she won a travel award from the school and traveled to Tunisia where she painted several Mediterranean landscapes. In 1938 the painter moved to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, where she painted the beautiful landscapes seen from her window. In Rio, Pierrefort had two individual exhibitions, both at the National Museum of Fine Arts, in the years 1946 and 1956. Although widowed in 1944, Pierrefort decided not to return to France until 1950. She remained there until 1959 when she definitively returned to Brazil. Her atelier in the neighbourhood of Glória was frequented by many emerging artists who learned the techniques of impressionism from her. Afterwards, Pierrefort painted for almost a decade in Brazil until she passed away in 1968 in Rio. After her death, many canvases were found in her studio but had been damaged or destroyed by humidity and by the intervention of her many cats. The painter Sergio Telles...

David Bates 19th century English River landscape, with fisherman by the river side. David Bates was born in Cambridgeshire. He spent most of his early life in Worcestershire, where he became apprenticed at the Royal Worcester Porcelain Works. A painter in both oils and watercolours, Bates visited North Africa, before returning to paint landscapes mostly of Wales and Scotland. He shows the influence of Benjamin Williams Leader (1831-1923), Joseph Thors and S.H. Baker. David Bates also made small oil sketches of hedges and plants, which were usually inscribed on the reverse. The artist’s works display considerable technical virtuosity, ranging from the serene landscape, to the uneven swagger of his later works, which were noticeably less colourful. Although Bates was more than capable of producing refined landscapes, he was equably as capable of painting detailed...

This original oil painting by David Bates, dated 1895, is presented and supplied in a mid 20th century ornate frame. The frame dimensions are 54cm high x 74cm wide. The visible painting is 39cm high x 59.5cm wide (15.36inches high x 23.43inches wide). The painted surface has benefitted from some restoration, cleaning and conservation, which took place in 2012 on our instructions. The canvas was lined during this restoration process. Previously with John Noott, Broadway, Worcestershire. The painting is signed and dated lower left. David Bates was a British landscape painter, who spent most of his life in the Midlands and belonged to the Birmingham school of artists. He lived in Great Malvern and later in Edgbaston, Birmingham. He was born in Cambridgeshire and spent most of his early life in Worchestershire, where he became apprenticed to the Royal Worcester Porcelain Factory from 1855. He became well known for his floral works on porcelain. He left to pursue a full time career as a professional artist in 1880. He travelled extensively around Europe and North Africa, including Switzerland and Egypt, then returned to Britain where he established a reputation as an accomplished landscape artist. Many of his best landscapes are of Scotland or Wales. He was however also a proficient painter of figures, cattle and farmworkers. David Bates was an “open air” artist, and his works display considerable technical ability and captures the lushness and detail of what he saw. He achieved considerable recognition and exhibited at the principal London galleries from 1868, including 26 paintings at the Royal Academy between 1863-1893. Lord Leighton, then President of the Royal Academy purchased one picture himself. Bates also exhibited at the Royal Society of British Artists, the Gratton Gallery, Suffolk Street and the New Watercolour Society. Today his work is held by the Liverpool Museum and the Worcester Museum and Art Gallery. This original oil painting, painted in 1895, depicts a village in mid Wales in the late Victorian era. The centre of the painting shows a wide stream or small river which has meandered down from the hills and mountains shown in the background. At the side of the riverbank is a large fallen tree which is being used by an angler watched by two spectators . Close to the village is a stone bridge, with two arches spanning the river. Beyond that are whitewashed cottages and houses with grey slate roofs. Wisps of smoke rise from the chimneys. There are trees along the river...
