David Bates b.1840 Art
British, 1840-1921
David Bates was an English landscape artist who painted in oils and watercolour. He was born in Cambridge, and from 1855 worked as a porcelain painter at the Royal Worcester porcelain works in Worcester - where he came to specialise in painting flowers. He left his employment there in 1880 to become a full-time professional painter.
Bates was an "open-air" rural landscape artist, painting in the Midlands, Scotland and Wales, and abroad in Switzerland and Egypt. His work shows the influence of Benjamin Williams Leader, Joseph Thors and Samuel Henry Baker, and Bates is associated in style with the Birmingham School of artists.
Bates exhibited many works at the Royal Academy, Grosvenor Gallery, Royal Society of British Artists and the New Watercolour Society in London, and at the Royal Birmingham Society of Artists. His works are currently on display in Liverpool museum, Worcester City Museum, and several other art galleries.(Biography provided by Robert Azensky Fine Art)

David Bates
19th century English River landscape, with fisherman by the river side.
David Bates was born in Cambridgeshire. He spent most of his early life in Worcestershire, where he became apprenticed at the Royal Worcester Porcelain Works. A painter in both oils and watercolours, Bates visited North Africa, before returning to paint landscapes mostly of Wales and Scotland. He shows the influence of Benjamin Williams Leader (1831-1923), Joseph Thors and S.H. Baker.
David Bates also made small oil sketches of hedges and plants, which were usually inscribed on the reverse. The artist’s works display considerable technical virtuosity, ranging from the serene landscape, to the uneven swagger of his later works, which were noticeably less colourful.
Although Bates was more than capable of producing refined landscapes, he was equably as capable of painting detailed...

Antique Scottish Highlands Signed Oil Painting Loch Tay Perthshire

"Loch Tay"
by F. E. Jamieson (British 1895-1950)
signed, lower corner with pseudonym "W. Richards"
titled verso to canvas
oil painting on canvas, unframed
canvas: 16 x 24 inches
Fine quality antique oil painting by the much admired and celebrated British artist F. E. Jamieson (1895-1950). The painting is signed by Jamieson to the lower right corner with his favoured pseudonym, "W. Richards".
The painting captures this brooding Highland landscape and the deep and dark waters of Loch Tay, one of the most stunning lochs in Scotland.
Loch Tay is a magnificent dark stretch of water, 15 miles (24 km) long and around 508 ft deep.
It’s the largest loch in Perthshire and one of the deepest in Scotland. To the north, the loch is flanked by the impressive bulk of the Ben Lawers mountain range, much of which is designated as a National Nature Reserve. The main A827 road runs high above the loch, west from Kenmore. The contours are gentler on the southern shore and Sustrans Cycle Route Number 7 runs along a quiet unclassified road.
It's hard to believe that ancient settlers once lived on Loch Tay, inhabiting artificially created islands known as crannogs. There are eighteen crannogs on Loch Tay, most are now submerged but a large crannog near the northern shore at Kenmore can be clearly seen. This was the ancient burial place of Queen Sybilla, wife of Alexander King...

Picking Flowers
Oil on canvas, signed & dated 1913
Image size: 25 inches x 20.75 inches
Size including frame: 37.25 inches x 33 inches
Paul Émile Vernon was born in Blois, in the Loire Valley region of France on 14 March, 1872. Although little is recorded of his early life, he is known to have attended the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Tours where he received a first prize in drawing. He went on to study at the Paris fine art academy under William-Adolphe Bouguereau (1825-1905) and Augustus Truphème (1836-1898).
Influenced by Bouguereau in his subject matter, Vernon began to specialise in paintings of women and children, often surrounded by or holding flowers. In addition to portraits, he also produced a number of floral still life works. He made his debut at the Paris Salon in 1898 and also exhibited at the Tour fine art and decorative fair. In addition to exhibiting in his own country, he also exhibited in England in 1904 at the Royal Academy from an address at 2 Upstall Street, Camberwell.
In 1907, Vernon travelled to New York and again in 1908 where he stayed both times at the Hotel...
