Pair of French Art Deco macassar inlay armchairs by Maison Dominique, 1928–1932

By Dominique

Located in New York City, NY

An elegant and finely executed pair of French Art Deco bergères by Maison Dominique, one of the most celebrated Parisian decorating firms of the Art Deco period. Founded in 1922 by André Domin and Marcel Genevrière, Maison Dominique became renowned for interiors and furnishings that combined the refinement of classical French craftsmanship with the clean, architectural lines of modern design. These beautifully proportioned club chairs exemplify the firm's restrained elegance. Each side chair features a gracefully curved barrel back framed by fluted tubular front uprights, terminating in ball sabots, with short splayed rear legs. The gently clover shaped crest rail is inlaid along its entire length with alternating Macassar ebony stringing, while the fluted front uprights are accented with contrasting Macassar ebony capped arm posts, creating a subtle yet sophisticated decorative effect characteristic of Dominique's finest work. The hardwood frames highlighting the warm mahogany tones and the striking Macassar ebony inlay have a traditional hand rubbed French polish finish. The tub chairs retain their vintage mauve crushed velvet upholstery, finished with vintage decorative gimp trim outlining the upholstered panels. The generous loose seat cushions have a soft feel and are perhaps down -filled, making these exceptionally comfortable lounge chairs while maintaining their refined Art Deco profile. One can either use them as they are upholstered or use this as an opportunity to recover the chairs in a fabric of your choosing, while preserving the original foundation. This rare and stylish pair of fauteuils perfectly captures the understated luxury and impeccable craftsmanship for which Maison Dominique is admired. This pair is unsigned. Documentation featuring a photo of the chair provided from a page in " Le Style 1925", Baschet et Cie, Editeurs 13 Rue Saint-Georges, Paris- Textes D'Yvonne Brunhammer conservateur au Musée des Arts Decoratifs de Paris . About Maison Dominique Founded in Paris in 1922, Maison Dominique quickly established itself as one of the leading decorating houses of the French Art Deco movement. The firm specialized in complete interior schemes, furniture, lighting, and decorative objects, distinguished by exceptional craftsmanship, elegant proportions, and a restrained modernism that contrasted with the more lavish designs of some contemporaries. Maison Dominique exhibited at the landmark Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes in Paris in 1925, the exhibition that gave the Art Deco movement its name and introduced its aesthetic to an international audience. In 1926, André Domin and Marcel Genevrière became members of the prestigious Groupe des Cinq, alongside Jean Puiforcat, Pierre Chareau, Pierre Legrain, and Raymond Templier—a select circle of designers who helped define the highest standards of French Art Deco design. Today, furniture by Maison Dominique is prized by collectors for its timeless elegance, superb construction, and sophisticated use of luxurious materials.
