Best known as Pablo Picasso’s famed muse and greatest love, Dora Maar was also an extraordinarily talented painter and photographer in her own right. An accomplished commercial and documentary photographer, her visionary photomontages have become icons of surrealism. Firmly entrenched in Surrealist circles when she met Picasso at a tea room in 1935, they began an artistic collaboration which developed into an almost decade-long romance. Estranged from his wife Olga Koklova and distanced from his mistress Marie-Thérèse Walter, Picasso’s personal and creative life was in turmoil when he met Maar, while she was at a high point in her career. This relationship proved to be the necessary impetus to rejuvenate his painting, while for Maar it expanded her repertoire and creative output.
