Ed Rossbach Art
American, 1914-2002
Ed Rossbach (1914-2002) completed his graduate studies at Cranbrook in 1946. He, along with Marianne Strengell worked within the narrow parameters of Euro-Bauhaus-Scandinavian weaving traditions for industry. “In reaction to this tight definition of textiles,” Jo Ann C. Stabb wrote in Retro/Prospective: 25+ Years of Art Textiles and Sculpture (vol. 37), “Rossbach became fascinated by indigenous textile processes and the use of found materials as he studied artifacts in the anthropology collection at University of California, Berkeley, as a faculty member from 1950 to 1979. Noted for creating three-dimensional, structural forms from unexpected, humble materials including plastic, reeds, newspaper, stapled cardboard, twigs, Rossbach inspired a renaissance in basketry and vessel forms and influenced other artists, including his students Gyöngy Laky and Lia Cook.”
Rossbach began making baskets out of tundra grasses while stationed in the Aleutians during World War II, and went on to earn a Master of Fine Arts degree from Cranbrook Academy on the GI Bill. Like Pat Hickman and Lillian Elliott, he became part of the Bay Area fiber arts movement of the 1960s and 1970s, challenging traditional forms and media in basketmaking. He used plastic, metal, food cartons, and old newspapers to express his delight in American popular culture. A carefully crafted basket made out of trash was Rossbach's challenge to his audience to rediscover the joy of doing, of creating something of no value that was still beautiful.to

He made a living working with photography, jewelry, bronze sculpture and antique restoration. An artwork in denim fabric by a French Post War & Contemporary artist living in New York City, Jean de la Verrière, An untrained, art brut, 'outsider' artist, now 85. He sold some of his denim patriotic flag works through OK Harris gallery in Soho in the 1980s, one went directly to Ralph Lauren, according to the artist. He is also known for sculpture. particularly his working model, fully functional guillotine sculptures. Artist says he was influenced by Pop Art particularly Robert Rauschenberg and Jasper Johns works. He was in the New York art world along with his artist friends Bernar Venet, Arman and Claude Gillie. Mixed-Media Wall Sculpture foam clay, acrylic & enamel on wood. "In a While"
By Vera Vizzi
Located in FISTERRA, ES
IN A WHILE (2025) is a small-scale, wall-mounted mixed-media sculpture by Vera Vizzi that transforms a familiar domestic object into a sculptural encounter. Hand-modeled in foam clay and applied onto a compact wooden block (25 x 9 x 10 cm), the work is finished with layered acrylic paint and enamel marker decoration along the extruded “tube” form. The piece foregrounds tactile surface, color contrast (white base with red/yellow graphic motifs) and a vertical, relief-like silhouette that reads equally as objet d’art or a focused accent on a gallery wall.
Conceptually the work frames an everyday action — squeezing a tube — as a compressed temporal event: small gestures that compress time and meaning. Keywords for search and contextualisation: mixed media on wood, foam clay sculpture, enamel and acrylic, wall sculpture, small contemporary sculpture...
