Edmund Ward Art
American, 1892-1990
Edmund Franklin Ward (1892-1990) was an accomplished painter, visual storyteller, and exceptional draughtsman who enjoyed a successful career as an illustrator. His art ranged in style and subject matter from dark tonalist in oils to humorous in wash and watercolor. Born in White Plains, New York, Ward began his career before turning age twenty with The Saturday Evening Post and continued to work for the publication for many years, illustrating the “Alexander Botts” and “Assistant District Attorney Doowinkle” stories.
A contemporary of Norman Rockwell, Ward studied at the Art Students League under teachers Thomas Fogarty, Edward Dufner, and George Bridgman. As young artists, he and Rockwell shared a studio together in the attic of a Manhattan brownstone. He later moved to the Manhattan suburb of New Rochelle, a well-known artist colony which, at the time, was the home of many of the top commercial illustrators of the day, including his friend, Norman Rockwell. Rockwell included experiences he and Ward shared in his autobiography, My Adventures as an Illustrator.
His emotional, richly detailed art earned Ward recognition as a talented visual storyteller. Besides The Saturday Evening Post, publications featuring his illustrations included Youth’s Companion, Liberty, Ladies’ Home Journal, Redbook, Pictorial Review, McCall’s, Country Home, Country Gentleman, Woman’s Home Companion, and American Collier’s. Ward spent his illustration career in White Plains where he was commissioned to paint a mural for the Federal Building. Among his professional affiliations were the Salmagundi Club, the Guild of Freelance Artists, and the Society of Illustrators.to

Figure in a Lanscape
By Francis Plummer
Located in London, GB
Oil on board, 62cm x 42cm, (70cm x 50cm framed). The picture is in good condition.
Plummer trained at the Royal Academy Schools in the early 1950s, championed by Stanley Spencer and Sir Herbert Read, he was the recipient of the coveted Leverhulme Scholarship. In a mixed career which included illustration work for The National Trust, anatomical illustration for Guys Hospital and teaching, painting ran parallel to his commercial work. Plummer specialised in the medium of egg tempera, as well as oil painting, a technique little used since the frescos of the Renaissance, he often worked on a large scale, but in tremendous detail, combining Classical iconography and formal composition with visual exploration evocative of William Blake and...

Paris, rue des Solitaires, oil painting by Pierre Coquet
Reference number F489
The painting is framed with a natural oak floated frame.
65 x 50 cm (70 x 55 cm frame included)
This work is painted with oil on a paper that is laid on a board and placed in a made to measure wood strectcher. It is signed in the low right
Paris is one of Pierre most important subjects. Pierre's Paris is always depicted in a grey atmosphere. Buildings are stylized but the city is recognizable with its typical grey galvanised steel and orange terracota chimneys.
The composition here is a little atypical, as there is a certain symmetry between the top and bottom of the painting. You could almost turn it upside down, there's a kind of mirror effect.
The support for the painting is a cardboard box salvaged from the art school where he taught (Corvisart-Paris). The students used it to protect their tables. Pierre kept them and painted on them, and we can see little drawings or annotations made by students who had fun scribbling on them.
Provenance : Workshop of the artist (stamped and numbered on the back)
