Edward Wilbur Dean Hamilton was born in Pennsylvania and studied painting in Boston, where he became an important member of the Boston School of Painting. Hamilton was an impressionist landscape, genre and portrait painter and was especially noted for his garden landscapes. He studied at the Massachusetts College of Art and Design, and in 1883 moved to Providence, Rhode Island, where he studied with Tomasso Juglaris at the Rhode Island School of Design. In 1892, Hamilton returned to Boston, setting up a studio on Boylston Street and exhibiting at the Boston Art Club and the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts.
