Hallmarked Silver Plated Keepsake Box, Sheffield, Uk, Circa 1900
Hallmarked Silver Plated Keepsake Box, Sheffield, Uk, Circa 1900

Hallmarked Silver Plated Keepsake Box, Sheffield, Uk, Circa 1900

Located in Colorado Springs, CO

Offered is a stunning Sheffield silver keepsake box dating to 1900, with associated hallmark. This small box includes a clean interior and rounded corners. The box is free of names or initials, but would have been used to house keepsakes such as jewelry or cufflinks. A well maintained, elegant piece, this antique silver box is an excellent addition to any silver collection. Trinket or keepsake boxes have taken on many forms since their first conception in ancient times. However their purpose remains the same; to store jewelry and other items precious to the owner. Originally, these boxes were used specifically for jewelry. These were in common use as early as 5000 BC in Ancient Egypt, when the majority of Egyptians, both male and female, wore jewelry. Boxes were used to keep these gemstone encrusted items safe. In Ancient Rome, jewelry was a status symbol. Rings and brooches were utilized to represent ones status in society. Again, boxes were needed for security and storage purposes. Finding early examples of these are quite rare. Victorian and Edwardian examples of trinket boxes are far more common. This is because owning jewellery was a luxury until the Victorian era- let alone possessing so much a box was needed to store it all. Fine jewelry and other items became available to the masses after the industrial revolution due to the reduction in production costs. This led to a demand for trinket boxes, which were much smaller than jewelry boxes and therefore better suited to the needs of the middle class who did not yet possess an abundance of jewelry. In Victorian households, collectables and other items of interested were also stashed inside these boxes. This is why they are known as trinket or keepsake boxes, rather than just jewelry boxes, although of course jewelry was also stored in them. Trinket boxes were produced in large numbers around this time. Many were lined with colored plush or velvet or rich wood. More elaborate designs had interior divisions and trays for rings and other pieces of jewellery. It was also common to see trinket boxes so small that they could only contain one item, such as a single ring. Ornate exteriors were created to reflect the value of the trinket boxes contents. The Edwardian era saw the introduction of new styles of trinket box. These included small circular or oblong boxes...

Lalique "Épis" Crystal and Silver-Plated Table Box, France, Circa 1980s
Lalique "Épis" Crystal and Silver-Plated Table Box, France, Circa 1980s

Lalique "Épis" Crystal and Silver-Plated Table Box, France, Circa 1980s

By Lalique

Located in West Palm Beach, FL

Lalique "Épis" Crystal and Silver-Plated Table Box, France, Circa 1980s Lalique "Épis" crystal and silver-plated table box featuring the celebrated Épis (Wheat) pattern, signed Lalique France. This elegant French crystal table box combines the purity of thick, hand-finished clear crystal with sculptural satin-frosted relief decoration and substantial silver-plated mounts. Designed with a robust hinged lid and weighty silver-plated frame, the box exemplifies the refined craftsmanship and timeless Art Deco-inspired aesthetic that has distinguished Lalique throughout the late twentieth century. The Épis pattern—French for "ears of wheat"—is among Lalique's most enduring naturalistic designs. Two gracefully sweeping wheat stalks are rendered in high relief across the lid, their alternating frosted and polished surfaces creating remarkable depth as they capture and diffuse light. Wheat has long symbolized abundance, prosperity, fertility, and renewal, themes that René Lalique frequently interpreted through botanical forms of exceptional elegance. Unlike many lighter decorative crystal boxes, this example is crafted with substantial solid crystal walls and a base, giving it impressive weight and an architectural presence. Equally noteworthy are the heavy-duty silver-plated mounts, whose precision-fitted frame and robust hinges provide both durability and refined visual contrast against the luminous crystal. The quality of the mounts elevates the piece beyond a simple trinket box, making it an elegant decorative object suitable for a coffee table, desk, vanity, or cocktail cabinet. Produced as Pattern No. 10579, the Épis collection dates from the 1980s–1990s, reflecting Lalique's continued mastery of combining René Lalique's celebrated naturalistic motifs with clean, modern geometric forms. The restrained design allows the exceptional crystal carving to remain the focal point while complementing both traditional and contemporary interiors. Signed "Lalique France," this sophisticated table box is ideal for storing jewelry, cufflinks, watches, treasured keepsakes, or desk accessories while serving as a sculptural decorative accent in its own right. Dimensions Width: 5.5 in. Depth: 4.5 in. Height: 2 in. Condition Excellent vintage condition. Signed Lalique France. Heavy crystal with substantial silver-plated mounts exhibiting light age-appropriate wear and retaining an exceptional presentation. Price Recommendation (1stDibs): $1,295 Comparable Lalique crystal boxes...
