Ernst Barlach

German, 1870-1938

Ernst Barlach was a German expressionist sculptor, printmaker and writer. His participation in the war made him change his position, and he is mostly known for his artworks protesting against the war. Barlach trained under French artists and produced Art Nouveau-styled sculpture and works on paper, but at first unable to find success. This led to a trip to Russia where the artist began creating figurative sculptures inspired by early Gothic art, carving spiritual and emotional themes from hard-woods and bronze casts. Barlach's fame increased after the war, he received many awards and became a member of the prestigious Preußische Akademie der Künste (Prussian Art Academy) in 1919. He was a supporter of the war in the years leading to World War I, he generated many anti-war sculptures based on his experiences. Later in life, he concentrated on prints, producing hundreds of black-and-white lithographs and woodcuts, some of which illustrated books and plays he wrote himself. Remarkable original Expressionist lithograph, a reminder of suffering from war and its consequences on human's life.

Plaster Polychrome Display Sculpture Bust Enchanting Woman
Located in BROOKLYN, NY
Possibly Beatrice, but likely a Grand Tour bust figure, painted plaster over wood. Marked 921 to verso. Barely a few losses to paint. Enchanting and remarkable bust of a young medieval woman. Grand Tour busts were popular souvenirs for wealthy Europeans, particularly British aristocrats, who traveled around Europe, especially Italy, from the 17th to the 19th centuries. These busts often depicted historical figures, mythological characters, or, as seen here, idealized figures in classical style. The provided search results and image descriptions suggest that this could be a 19th-century polychrome painted plaster cast bust...

Ernst Barlach Bronze Sculpture "The Reunion" on Marble Base

Modernist bronze plaster sculpture by German artist Ernst Barlach titled "The Reunion" (or better known as "Das Wiedersehen" in German) which depicts the dramatic reunion of the Apostle Thomas and Christ. Signed "E. Barlach" on the base (with "MPI" mark which leads us to believe this is a later reproduction casting based on the original) and attached to a marble base. Barlach, born in 1870, was a leading member of German Expressionism. He worked as a painter, printmaker, writer, architect and sculptor. In 1925 he became a member of the Academy to Fine Arts in Munich. In 1933 he was admitted as a member to the Peace Class of the military order "Pour le Merite...
