Fog & Mørup Lighting

Danish

Fog & Mørup was a legendary Danish lighting manufacturer best known to collectors for the sleek and sculptural ceiling lights, wall lights and floor lamps that the company produced in the postwar years. Its vintage fixtures are ideal for design enthusiasts looking to introduce a splash of Scandinavian modernist ingenuity into a space.

Founders Ansgar Fog and Erik Mørup reportedly met in Aarhus, Denmark, in 1902. They became fast friends and discussed going into business together. An opportunity materialized a couple of years later when they discovered a newspaper advertisement — an Aarhus consignment warehouse had been vacated and its landowner was looking for a business to sign a new lease. The friends took a chance and established a wholesale metalwork business.

In 1906, Fog and Mørup moved the business to Copenhagen and focused on lighting. They purchased an electrical company in 1913 and opened a lighting factory shortly thereafter. The following two decades saw rapid expansion. One of the most notable Fog & Mørup designs from the interwar period was the brass Kongelys table lamp, created by Niels Rasmussen Thykier.

Johannes (Jo) Hammerborg, an alum of leading Danish silverware brand Georg Jensen, joined Fog & Mørup as head of design in the late 1950s, ushering in a period of commercial success and international prominence.

Hammerborg was an innovative designer whose sleek and streamlined aesthetic came to define the company. During his time with Fog & Mørup, Hammerborg designed over 60 lighting fixtures and collaborated with other designers such as Erik Balslev, Sophus Frandsen and more. Fog & Mørup also worked with designers Torsten Thorup and Claus Bonderup, who created the iconic trumpet-shaped Semi pendant light in 1967.

Fog & Mørup sales remained healthy into the 1970s. A merger followed in the ensuing decades and the brand definitively closed in 2005 after being acquired by Nordlux.

An Early Modernist Brass Table Lamp By Fog & Mørup Of Denmark
By Fog & Mørup
Located in Søborg, DK
An early mordernist table lamp in brass and copper by Fog & Mørup of Denmark Standing on an Art Deco inspired 3 step base in brass with a push button on off switch. Brass upright with a brass cup for the E27 Bakelite bulb holder and lampshade holder also in brass. A turned copper lampshade mounted with a brass screw. Original white paint on the inside of the lampshade that has started to flake off in places but has been left completely original just like the rest of the lamp. The table lamp has been dismantled and all parts cleaned with no polishing in order to maintain all of the glorious color and patina to the surfaces. Rewired with a 3 meter brass colored twisted cloth flex and grounded. Can be fitted with an EU US or UK electrical plug. Responsible worldwide shipping. Ansgar Fog and E Mørup met in 1902 at the firm of Marinus Kock in Aarhus, Denmark. They rapidly became close friends and began to develop the idea of going into business together. On 22 February 1904 they answered an advertisement in the newspaper Jyllandsposten calling for ‘an energetic man to take over a well-established ironmongery and consignment warehouse’. Fog Morup TromboneThe warehouse contents encompassed paraffin lamps, gas lamps, gas pipes, hosepipes, pumps, glasscutters and ‘other marketable and profitable wares’. The pair borrowed the asking price of 3,000 Danish kroner and started business as agents and wholesalers on 1 July 1904 in three small rooms with cellars in Fiskergyde in Aarhus. Both Fog and Mørup were then 24 years old. Fog Morup Medio, Classic and DiskosIn 1906 Fog & Mørup moved to Copenhagen and began to specialise in lighting, taking over electrical dealership Dahls Brothers in 1913, and on 1 April 1915 they opened their first lighting factory at Nørregade 7. Rapid expansion of the company over the next two decades, together with the takeover of several other lighting companies, required the factory to move to larger premises more than once, and the Nørregade premises became the company's showroom. It was in the early 1960s that Fog & Morup really emerged as a significant force in lighting design, following the company’s appointment in 1957 of Johannes (Jo) Hammerborg as head of design, which initiated what was to prove the most creative and commercially successful period in its history. Hammerborg’s sleek and innovative modernist designs became the trademark style of Fog & Morup throughout the 60s and into the 70s, and propelled the company into the forefront of Danish modern lighting.Fog Morup Semi By the early 1970s Fog & Mørup had reached its prime, with sales in 1972 in excess of 50 million Danish kroner and an export market growing at 30 per cent per annum. The company’s belief that ‘presented with a challenge, designers as individuals or in design groups will achieve their finest work’ enabled them to attract many talented architects and designers to work under Hammerborg’s exacting eye, including Sophus Frandsen, Claus Bonderup and Torsten Thorup, Jørgen Bo, E Balslev, Karen and Ebbe Clemmensen, Sidse Werner, Hans Due and Peter Avondoglio.Fog Morup Arabia kitchen lights Perhaps the most widely recognised of Fog & Morup's lights today is the iconic Semi designed by Bonderup and Thorup in 1967 while they were still students, but the company also produced many other innovative, important and award-winning lights including Frandsen’s Fibonacci, Hammerborg’s Saturn, Tunica and Classic and Diskos, Werner’s Formland, Balslev’s Radius and Hans Due’s Optima...

The hand blown glass shades are in great condition with no cracks. Rewired and grounded. Glass shades will be removed for shipping. Responsible worldwide shipping available. The company was founded on 1 June 1904 by ironmonger Ansgar Fog (1880-1930) as a trading company in Aarhus. The following year, wholesaler Erik Mørup (1879-1972) was admitted as a partner. In 1906 it moved to Copenhagen. In 1915, the company was expanded with a factory for lamps and chandeliers, and in 1948 it was transformed into a limited company. At the same time, Mørup became chairman of the board and Alfred Emanuel Gillesberg (1895-1959) managing director. In 1956, Fog & Mørup moved to a new factory at Sydmarken 46 in Søborg designed by Preben Hansen. Fog & Mørup is probably best known for the Kongelyslampen, which got its name when Fog & Mørup presented the lamp to King Christian X on his 25th anniversary in 1937. The table lamp was made of bronzed brass and cost DKK 35.50. Fog & Mørup had great success with the sale of this model. Fog & Mørup's heyday was the 1960s and 1970s, when Jo Hammerborg and other designers created a large number of both original and salable models of lamps. In 1978, Fog & Mørup was acquired by competitor LYFA. Fog & Mørup's production was moved from Sydmarken in Søborg to LYFA in Måløv for better utilization of the production capacity. In 1988, LYFA took over the lighting company ABO in Assentoft near Randers, which was particularly known for magnetic ball lamps produced in the 1970s. Only one year later, in 1989, LYFA was taken over by the listed company Lyskær Belysning A/S. The company's new name became Lyskær-Lyfa A/S in October 1989, but already in 1991 the company was bought by Horn Belysning...
