Francisca Sutil Art

Chilean, b. 1952
Born in Santiago, Chilean painter and printmaker Francisca Sutil is known today for her stunning abstract and chromatic works. She received her studies in art moving between the U.S. and Chile, living in New York until 1992 before returning to Chile. With a practice spanning more than 30 years, Sutil bases her work on the experimentation of plastics resources, calling herself a "crafter of painting." Her art is characterized by its superb construction and unique thought-provoking qualities. Her work has no intended content, instead the artist desires to provoke emotions and sensations to encourage reflection and meditation. Sutil’s technique is integral to the experience, both in her prints and drawings on textured handmade paper, and in her pigmented gesso surfaces and vertical oil bands. She is interested in the relationship of color and light, as well as in the nature of the support. Her interest in the observation and meditation that the paintings cause is seen in the chained sequence of her compositions: trance-inducing shapes or marks assembled to reflect the experience of their creation.

Francisca Sutil is a Chilean painter known for her research of the chromatic surface, the nature of the support and the study of textures and materials that she prepares herself. Born in Santiago de Chile in 1952, she moved to New York where she received an M.F.A. from Pratt Institute in 1981. Since 1992, Sutil has lived and worked in Santiago. Sutil’s work is characterized by its superb construction and unique contemplative qualities. When approaching her paintings, the viewer is immediately captivated by the textures and hues. She proposes a rigorous exercise of painting on support, regardless of its material composition, in search of pictorial depth. It is a mental process from which a neat and pure chromatic production emerges. Intending no specific content in her paintings, she instead asks viewers to respond openly and honestly to her abstractions. She uses her work to provoke emotions and sensations, and in turn, encourages reflection, meditation and lasting thoughts and memories...

Waterline Fine Art, Austin, TX is pleased to present the following work: Oil, pastel, and paper collage on canvas. Signed and dated verso. 52.75 x 47.75 in. 54 x 49 in. (framed) Gilded floater frame. Provenance Compass Rose, Chicago Born Sylvan Irwin Goldberg in 1924 and raised in the Bronx, Michael Goldberg was an important figure in American Abstract Expressionism, who began taking art classes at the Art Students League in 1938. A gifted student, Goldberg finished high school at the age of 14 and enrolled in City College. He soon found New York’s jazz scene to be a more compelling environment, and he began skipping classes in favor of the Harlem jazz clubs near campus. Goldberg’s love of jazz would become a lifelong passion and a key component to his approach to composition in his paintings. From 1940 to 1942, like many of the leading artists of the New York School, Goldberg studied with Hans Hofmann. In 1943, he put his pursuit of painting on hold and enlisted in the U.S. Army. Serving in North Africa, Burma, and India, Goldberg received a Purple Heart and a Bronze Star before being discharged in 1946. After his service, he traveled and worked in Venezuela before returning to the United States, settling back in New York and resuming studies with Hofmann and at the Art Students League. Living downtown and frequenting the Cedar Bar, Goldberg befriended many of the artists of the New York School. In 1951, his work was included in the groundbreaking Ninth Street Show, co-organized by Leo Castelli, Conrad Marca-Relli, and the Eighth Street Club, and featuring the work of - among others - Hofmann, Jackson Pollock, Willem de Kooning, and Franz Kline. In 1953, the Tibor de Nagy...
