Bitossi Aldo Londi Rimini Blu Ceramic Vase, Italy, 1960s

About Bitossi (Manufacturer) Like a Fellini movie, the ceramics of this famed Italian company embody a creative spectrum that ranges from the playful and earthy to the high-minded and provocative. Based in Florence, Bitossi Ceramiche draws on craft traditions that date back to the 1500s. These find expression in the artisanal vases and animal figures by the firm’s longtime art director Aldo Londi, as well as the colorful, totemic vessels designed by the high priest of postmodernism, Ettore Sottsass. The company was incorporated by Guido Bitossi in 1921, though the family began making art pottery in the mid-19th century. In the 1930s, Londi came aboard, bringing with him a mindset that respected time-honored craft, yet looked also to the future. On the one hand, Londi’s perspective fostered the making of Bitossi’s popular whimsical animal figures, hand-shaped and -carved and finished in a rich azure glaze known as “Rimini Blue.” But with his other hand, Londi reached out to thoughtful, experimental designers such as Sottsass. Starting in the 1950s, some 20 years before he founded the Memphis Postmodern design...

Fratelli Fanciullacci for Ebeling Reuss Majolica Basket Vase, Italy 1950s-1960s
By Fratelli Fanciullacci
Located in Clifton Springs, NY
Unusual vintage majolica basket vase features complex glaze with abstract leaves and flowers decors surrounding the motifs of cornucopia, a glove, and a deer, hand painted in dark teal color with black outlines over textured white background glaze. The handles are attached in crisscross manner with flat textured elements accented in the same teal and black colors. The vase is signed on the bottom with model number, "E&R", and "Italy"; while it does not have the usual manufacturer's mark, "FF", the glazing and the decor styles are both characteristic of Fratelli Fanciullacci designs from 1950s-1960s. It was common for Italian ceramics manufacturers to omit marking their pieces with their logos if the they were intended for American or European distributors; instead, they would only mark it "Italy" to allow the distributor to use their stickers, or rarely, they would mark the piece with "studio name" for "distributor name", if the distributor did not object. For example, Fratelli Fanciullacci marked their pieces for Ebeling Reuss...

Fratelli Fanciullacci Ceramic White Vase Pottery Ceramiche Artistiche, Italy
By Fratelli Fanciullacci
Located in Sofia, BG
Fratelli Fanciullacci The brothers Fanciullacci was prolific Italian pottery, who’s work is starting to become more widely known in the past few years, and is keenly sought amongst collectors. As a style it is hard to pin down as there were so many styles and produced – on a variety of clay bodies. Also, because most records were lost it is hard to identify designers or artist – except it is known that Aldo Londi worked there prior to going to Bitossi. Pieces from the FF factory were rarely marked – except for some pieces simply marked FF. Most though will have nothing or simply “Italy” and a number. After a while however, with experience, pieces by this maker start to stand out from the rest.
