Tuccia the Vestal Virgin Holding a Lamp After Angelica Kauffman

By Friedrich Hofelder

Located in Vancouver, British Columbia

An oil painting on canvas showing a portrait of a classical maiden depicted as a vestal virgin dressed in classical attire, having chestnut hair concealed by a guarnello or thin veil and holding a Roman oil lamp. The painting signed “F. Hofelder" on the lower right of the canvas was executed circa 1873 almost 100 years after the original by the late 18 Century neoclassical Swiss artist Angelika Kauffman. The virtually unknown Polish artist is likely to have copied the original painting hanging at the Gemäldegalerie Alte Meister (Old Masters Picture Gallery) in the Staatliche Kunstsammlungen, Dresden, Germany. The Swiss-born artist Angelica Kauffman...

19th Century Russian Icon of the Virgin and Child

Located in Madrid, ES

Beautiful Russian icon of the Virgin Mary holding the Christ Child, painted and gilded during the 19th century. Rich in spiritual significance and devotional character, this icon represents one of the most beloved subjects of Eastern Orthodox religious art. The composition depicts the Virgin Mary (Theotokos) tenderly holding the infant Jesus in her arms, emphasizing her role as the Mother of God and intercessor for humanity. The serene expressions, solemn gaze, and sacred intimacy between mother and child reflect the profound symbolism and theological depth characteristic of Russian iconography. Executed in oil and enhanced with gilded decoration, the icon displays the traditional artistic conventions of Orthodox painting, including stylized features, symbolic colors, and a luminous golden background that evokes the divine realm. The gilding beautifully complements the painted surface, creating a rich visual effect and enhancing the devotional presence of the work. Produced during the 19th century, a period of continued flourishing of icon painting in the Russian Empire, this piece would have served as an object of private devotion or as part of a domestic icon corner, a central element of Orthodox spiritual life. Its intimate dimensions make it ideal for display in a collection of religious art, iconography, devotional objects, or Eastern European antiques...

Oil on Canvas "the Prohibited Reading" After Karel Ooms

Located in Los Angeles, CA

A Large Continental Oil on Canvas "The Prohibited Reading " after Karel Ooms (Belgium, 1845-1900). This beautiful executed painting depicts a historical scene of an old man and a young woman who are huddled over a bible. The pair is gazing in apparent concern or alarm, over the old man's shoulder, towards something outside of the picture. The scene is likely set in the 16th or 17th century when Protestants were prosecuted, amongst others, for reading the bible in the vernacular, a practice prohibited by the Catholic Church at the time. Signed (l/r) A. Ribas 15-12-913. Within a giltwood carved frame. circa: Probably Belgium, 1913. Karel Ooms was born in Dessel on January 27, 1845 as the youngest son of a large peasant family. At school his extraordinary talent for drawing was discovered. When he was twelve his hometown provided financial support which allowed him to study at the Antwerp Academy of fine Arts. One of his teachers at the Academy was Nicaise de Keyser, one of the key figures in the Belgian Romantic-historical school of painting and a painter of mainly history paintings and portraits. After graduating from the Academy 1865 Karel Ooms was welcomed with pomp in his home town Dessel. He painted two altarpieces for the local church Saint Nicolas, to express his gratitude to his city. Karel Ooms settled as an independent artist in Antwerp around 1871. He quickly established a reputation as a portrait painter. In addition, he received commissions for religious paintings and history paintings. He gained particular recognition with two large paintings...
