George Hay Figurative Paintings

Scottish, 1831-1912

George Hay was born in Leith, Edinburgh. He studied under Roert Scott Lauder together with William Quiller Orchardson, William McTaggart and Hugh Cameron (1835–1918). Hay specialized in narrative paintings. His subjects were often inspired by Sir Walter Scott's Waverley Novels. He became an Associate Member of the Royal Scottish Academy (RSA) in 1869 and a full member in 1876, was appointed Secretary of the Academy in 1881 and 1907. In 1878, he was a founding member of the Royal Scottish Society of Painters in Watercolors (RSW). He is recorded as living at several addresses in Edinburgh, including 3 Kings Place, from where he exhibited from 1856–64. His work Caleb Balderstone's Ruse is a part of the Diploma Collection at the Royal Scottish Academy.

Charles Hunt Jnr British, (1829-1900) A Visitor Calls Oil on canvas, signed Image size: 24.75 inches x 34.75 inches Size including frame: 32.25 inches x 42.25 inches A wonderful genre painting by Charles Hunt of two men and two boys with horses and other animals in a cottage. A farmer and his two sons can be seen eating lunch at a table in rustic interior as a visitor approaches. Perhaps encouraged by the boys, a piglet seems to have found its way onto the table whilst a rabbit and guinea pig eat cabbage leaves on the floor. To the far right, a horse is shown in a stable area along with some piglets. To the far left, a terrier waits on the step by its master. Charles Hunt was a genre and figure painter born in Kensington, London in 1829. His sons Reuben Hunt...

An auction at Drouot's in Paris. Oil on canvas. Signed lower right. Around 1900-1910. René François Xavier Prinet (31 December 1861, Vitry-le-François – 26 January 1946, Bourbonne-les-Bains) was a French painter and illustrator who drew his subjects from middle-class society. He was born to Henri Prinet, an Imperial Prosecutor in Vitry-le-François. A promotion led to him being posted in Paris, where they lived in a home not far from the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts. His father painted as a hobby and was supportive of his desire to study art, having him seek the advice of Louis Charles Timbal [fr], a well-known church painter and friend of the family. Around 1880, he began his studies in earnest, in the studios of Jean-Léon Gérôme; remaining with him until 1885. That year, his painting "The Infant Jesus" was accepted for display at the Salon. This was followed by studies at the Académie Julian. At this time, he also became associated with a group of young artists known as the Bande Noire (Black Stripe), which included Lucien Simon, André Dauchez...
