Gian Emilio Malerba was an Italian painter, one of the founders of the Italian artistic movement Novecento in 1922 in Milan. He studied at the Academy of Brera with Tallone and Mentessi and made his debut with works influenced by the ways of the Scapigliatura. In 1913, Malerba obtained the Canonica Award and the following year his painting The Black Hat was purchased by the King of Italy. In 1916, he received an award from the Ministry of Education. Meanwhile, his art evolves into more clearly constructed compositions. Malerba exhibited at the XIII Venice Biennale with paintings, including the famous Maschere, which are already in tune with the current of Magical Realism. In 1922, he was also among the founders of the Novecento group which he exhibited in Milan the following year at the Pesaro gallery with the painting La collegiale which was purchased by the Modern Art Gallery of Lima. Malerba disappeared at the age of 46 while he was preparing to participate in the First Italian 20th-century Exhibition at the Permanente in Milan.
