Gino Hollander Art
Born in 1924 in Newark, NJ, Gino Hollander attended Rutgers University before serving in the U.S. Army’s Mountain Division Ski Troop during World War II. Hollander had a successful career as a documentary filmmaker throughout the 1950s. In 1960, he decided to focus on painting after becoming friends with Abstract Expressionist painters at the Cedar Tavern. He died at the age of 91 in 2015 in Newport Beach, CA.

Joseph Barrett (1936 – )
Joseph Barrett was born in Midland, North Carolina, in 1936 and studied at the Massachusetts College of Art in Boston and at the Tyler School of Art in Philadelphia. Barrett, now of Lahaska, Pennsylvania, has been painting his entire adult life. His favorite subjects include the landscape surrounding New Hope and many local landmarks often encompassing figures into his compositions. Barrett utilizes a heavy impasto and his palette bears similarities to that of Fern Coppedge and George Sotter. Barrett’s paintings are always found in unique and somewhat charming handmade frames designed by the artist and finished in metal leaf.
A living contemporary of the no longer living “New Hope School” impressionist painters, Joseph Barrett resides outside of New Hope above his old-fashioned antique shop and studio. This sophisticated and large scale Mid Century Modern abstract expressionistic oil on canvas painting was realized by the esteemed 20th century visual artist and filmmaker Gino Hollander (1924-2015), in the United States in 1974. In dialogue with other canonized visualized artists of the period, most notably Joan Mitchell, this painting offers a dynamic composition in an understated and vibrant palette using a variety of painterly techniques. Executed in predominantly in grisaille and flaxen hues with ecru and amber accents, the composition features turpentine rivulets of running pigment; chunky blocks of paint rendered with a palette knife; and delicately applied brush strokes against a painted white background. The result is a captivatingly layered work that offers sustained visual pleasure and abundant visual discoveries. The solid white background adds negative space but also breath and depth to the composition. Full of verve and dynamism- and exhibiting masterful paint handling-, this painting embodies the qualities that discerning collectors of Abstract Expressionism (and modern art in general) absolutely adore. It would be a winning addition to any style of interior from classic Mid Century Modern to contemporary. It is signed and dated by the artist, and is in excellent vintage condition.
