Born in 1924 in Newark, NJ, Gino Hollander attended Rutgers University before serving in the U.S. Army’s Mountain Division Ski Troop during World War II. Hollander had a successful career as a documentary filmmaker throughout the 1950s. In 1960, he decided to focus on painting after becoming friends with Abstract Expressionist painters at the Cedar Tavern. He died at the age of 91 in 2015 in Newport Beach, CA.

Executed in predominantly in grisaille and flaxen hues with ecru and amber accents, the composition features turpentine rivulets of running pigment; chunky blocks of paint rendered with a palette knife; and delicately applied brush strokes against a painted white background.
