Italian, 1823-1916

Giuseppe Raggio was born in Chiavari and while his father wished him to join the merchant marine, by 1845, he had decided to study painting and participated in his first exhibition in Genoa. Chicago-based fine art painter Bruno A. Surdo is classically trained in drawing and oil painting in the tradition of Renaissance masters. With strong command of the human form, Surdo creates dynamic compositions of people and places that communicate a rich commentary on the world around him. Entitled “Birch,” this small-scale oil painting depicts a young birch sapling against an olive wood board.
