Gloria Vanderbilt Art

American, b. 1924

Gloria Vanderbilt was a fashion designer, socialite, author and heiress to part of the Vanderbilt fortune. She was born on February 20, 1924, in Manhattan. The Vanderbilts were dubbed American Royalty in the Gilded Age who had more money in 1877 than the U.S. Treasury. By the mid-1900s most of the fortune had dissipated, but the family remained in the spotlight as social figures. Vanderbilt was best remembered for her own iconic fashion ventures, founded on designer jeans. After her father passed away, she and her widowed mother lived off of interest payments from her trust fund. Gloria Laura Vanderbilt died on June 17, 2019, in Manhattan.

Windswept Landscape Henry Moore drawing of Scottish landscape for W.H. Auden
By Henry Moore
Located in New York, NY
One of a series of 18 lithographs drawn by the artist fo¬r the Auden Poems/Moore Lithographs 1974 book and portfolio. This work is from an edition of 25 printed on vellum aside from the portfolio (edition of 75) and the book. Signed by the artist lower right in pencil; numbered lower left in pencil. Printed in inky black, this print features a shadowy landscape. Brush sweeps to the left, and the sky is drawn with long horizontal lines. In the bottom half of the composition, the ground looks rocky, perhaps dotted with shrubs. Windswept Landscape displays Moore’s fascination with light and dark – what he called a “…bias towards the blackness and mysterious depths.” Moore was inspired by the prints of Rembrandt and the drawings of Seurat, and even drew on his memories of viewing the Altamira cave paintings, recalling how some of the images used the shadow of candlelight on the rough surface of the rock to model light. Shortly before starting work on this series of lithographs, Moore had fallen ill, leaving him aware of his own mortality. His mood pervaded these prints with a sense of danger and foreboding. The Auden/Moore limited edition book and portfolio were exhibited on publication at the British Museum, London, with an accompanying catalogue. Windswept Landscape is one of a group of lithographs...

1970's Gloria Vanderbilt Signed Lithograph Springtime Flowers # 18/250
By Gloria Vanderbilt
Located in Morristown, NJ
Circa 1971, Springtime Flowers, a lithograph by Gloria Vanderbilt (1924-2019) pencil signed and numbered #18/250, She herself said “Color is my strongest passion, I can get absolutely intoxicated with colors and combining different colors. Bougainvillea against terra-cotta. Yes! Yes! Yes! Painting is such a joy.” Dimensions: 29"h x 23"w (sight), 39"h x 31"w (frame) Condition: Good, light toning along perimeter, not examined out of frame About the Artist: Gloria Vanderbilt was born in 1924 in New York City. When her father, Reginald Claypoole Vanderbilt, the railroad mogul, died, she inherited a large sum of money, which her mother controlled. However, after some time, her Aunt Gertrude determined that she needed to extract the child from an unfortunate parental situation and filed a petition with the court for custody. What followed is still considered one of the most scandalous trials where shocking evidence was made public. Gloria's mother lost custody. Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney was a patron of the arts and was instrumental in inspiring the young Gloria to pursue her artistic interests. After returning from a boarding school, Gloria enrolled in the Art Students League of New York. During the 50s and 60s, she started studying acting at Neighborhood Playhouse, where she appeared in several plays and performed on Broadway and several television shows. In 1948 the public saw for the first time Gloria Vanderbilt's art at the solo exhibition in New York, where she showcased numerous works, including watercolor and oil paintings. In 1968 one of her artworks was licensed by Hallmark Cards and by Bloomcraft, and the artist started designing glassware, pottery, and linen. One of hew most renowned works is the painting Truman (1956), a portrait of the famous writer Truman Capote. For a time, Gloria abandoned painting, and it seemed for a time that she would not be creating anything new. However, in 2001 she made a comeback with a successful solo exhibition titled Dream Boxes...

"Girls in White, " Gloria Vanderbilt, Three Sisters, American Modernism, Society
By Gloria Vanderbilt
Located in New York, NY
Gloria Vanderbilt (1924 - 2019) Girls in White, 2005 Acrylic on panel 12 x 12 inches Initialed "GV" lower left; titled and dated on the reverse A member of the affluent and influential Vanderbilt family, Gloria Vanderbilt was born into wealth on February 20, 1924, in New York City. Her father, Reginald Vanderbilt, was the great-grandson of Cornelius Vanderbilt, the creator of a railroad empire and one of America's first millionaires. Her mother, Gloria Morgan, was a young woman who loved parties more than parenthood. Gloria lost her father to liver disease when she was a toddler. She received a multimillion-dollar trust fund upon her father's death. For several years after her father's death, Gloria lived abroad with her mother and was often in the care of her maternal grandmother and her nurse Dodo. When she was 10 years old, Gloria Vanderbilt made headlines as the central figure in a bitter and very public custody battle. Her aunt Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney successfully fought her mother for Gloria. The court decided that Gloria could spend the summers with her mother, and that Dodo, Gloria's most beloved companion, would have to be let go. In her teens, Vanderbilt emerged as a popular young socialite with her own distinct style. She even appeared in Harper's Bazaar magazine in 1939. A while later, Vanderbilt headed out to Hollywood where her mother was already well ensconced in popular social circles. Gloria started dating much older men, including Errol Flynn and Howard Hughes. In 1941, she married Hollywood agent Pat De Cicco—she was only seventeen at the time. It proved to be an unhappy union, and Vanderbilt divorced her husband in 1945. Even before the divorce, she had found love again with Leopold Stokowski, a famous conductor. Vanderbilt and Stokowski married shortly after her divorce was complete. They had two sons together, Stanley and Christopher. Around this time, Vanderbilt also discovered her passion for art and studied at the Art Students League* of New York. She explored an interest in acting as well, studying with Sanford Meisner at the Neighborhood Playhouse. Gloria Vanderbilt appeared on Broadway in the short-lived revival of William Saroyan...
