Henri Picard Mantel Clocks

A fine and early clock, the case by Henri Picard of Paris and the movement by Raingo Frères. It is beautifully made of ormolu (mercury fire gilded bronze doré) mounted with exquisitely painted Sèvres style porcelain with a Bleu Celeste ground. The front panel shows a young couple, tending a flock of sheep in a tranquil country setting, a sleepy town in the distance. Above the dial she sits in fine clothes and the urn to the top shows them older together, a story of their love. Side panels are beautifully decorated with bows, flowers and a quiver of arrows. Other panels are delicately decorated with over glaze gilt decoration with applied porcelain 'jewels'. The porcelain is all signed to the reveres and numbered with movement number '1453', unusually the case is also numbered. The dial is porcelain with its original finely cut brass Breguet hands and is signed for the clockmaker Raingo Frères. The rear bezel is glazed to allow the movement to be seen. Please note that this design does not have a front glass over the dial. The French movement is of high quality and is by Raingo Freres. It is in excellent clean and running condition having been fully overhauled by our clockmaker. Pendulum is a replacement. It runs for 8 days and strikes the hours and halves on a bell. We have a video of the clock running, please ask and we will send you a link. Condition of the case is excellent, the original gilding clean and bright with only slight wear and discolouration. Porcelain is also excellent with no damage and hardly any wear. A few porcelain jewels are missing from the top left hand panel where the clock has been held for winding. The dial has a slight firing fault near the number five. Zacharie Raingo was apprenticed in Paris in 1790 and went on to establish Raingo Frères in 1813. Initially specialising in precision astronomical clocks and then after 1825 clocks and bronzes. Clients included the Emperor and Empress. The firm exhibited at many of the important exhibitions of the second half of the 19th century and was known for the fine quality of its ormolu. Henri Picard - The important founder and Gilder Henri Picard was based in Paris at 6, rue Jarente from 1831 to 1839, before moving to 10, rue de la Perle. The firm was active until around 1890. Celebrated for the high quality of his production, Henri Picard supplied many important patrons, including garnand table pieces for the petits appartements of Emperor Napoleon III at the Louvre. The panel below the dial is exquisitely painted with a scene two finely dressed young ladies in a country setting with garlands of roses. The panels to the front and sides, and the urn to the top are delicately painted with flowers. Porcelain is faintly signed to the reverse. The dial porcelain enamel on copper with blue and black lettering. It is complete with its original finely cut gilt hands and is signed for the clockmaker Raingo Frères. The rear bezel is glazed to allow the movement to be seen. The early French movement is of high quality and has a silk suspension. It is by Raingo Frères and has been fully overhauled and tested by out clockmaker. Pendulum is original. It runs for 8 days and strikes the hours and halves on a bell. Condition of the case is excellent, the original gilding is beautifully clean and bright with hardly any wear or discolouration and there are no losses. The porcelain is excellent with no damage and the gilt over-glaze decoration is also excellent with just one small area of loss to the rear of the urn. The dial is also in excellent condition with no damage. The original front glass has a slight chip to the edge. In every way a work of exquisite craftsmanship, this magnificent work of art is a complex and wonderful timepiece. The case and figures are cast by the important and highly regarded bronzier Henri Picard, active in Paris 1839 through around 1884. His firm supplied extensive furnishings to Emperor Napoleon III and an important pair of candelabra are held in the collection of the Musée du Louvre. His work is always characterized by the finest chasing and doré. The present example depicts putto resting among flowers in the field holding a garland of florals between them while flanking an oversized urn draped with acanthus overflowing with flowers and leaves over an angular Neoclassical case. Eight individual hand painted porcelain panels are set in the case, each an entirely unique work of art featuring flowers and pairs of cherubs surrounded by gilt highlights over a bright blue background.
