Elise Remender captures the romantic glamour of a bygone era in her contemporary figurative paintings that blend classical fine art and contemporary pop realism. It evokes a bygone era when Ernest Hemingway and Jackie O. were among the clientele. “I’m a bit of an old soul and there is a sense of elegance and beauty that has been lost in modern-day society, and I seek to recapture this essence in my work. Yellow Emoji is a unique portrait painting by Natasha Lelenco from her ongoing You Are The One series, a body of work investigating how identity is constructed, stylized and consumed within contemporary image culture. Throughout the You Are The One series, Lelenco explores the relationship between individuality and repetition. In Yellow Emoji, the direct gaze, symmetrical composition and intense chromatic palette reinforce this tension between personal expression and visual coding. Referencing historical portrait traditions while being painted in an artificial monochromatic yellow, it creates a dialogue between classical representation and contemporary screen culture. The frame functions as a threshold between past and present, between the physical object and the endless flow of digital images. Executed with acrylic paint, spray paint and Posca markers on canvas, the work combines meticulous portrait painting with the graphic immediacy of contemporary visual culture.
