A Meiji Japanese Repousse 950 pure silver presentation bowl signed and dated 1908 of historical importance. In 1907, President Teddy Roosevelt, after intervening in the Sino-Russo War, feared Japanese expansion against US territories. Roosevelt gathered every Us Navy warship from around the world, combined it into a single impressive fleet, painted the ships white and sailed this Great White Fleet on its first circumnavigation around the globe. By the time the fleet reached Japan on October 1908, tensions had subsided and a massive celebration and welcoming parties and Naval competitions commenced with the landing at Yokohama. This represents the emergence the United States Navy as an international naval power. This large punch bowl was an Imperial commission granted to silver master Shigemitsu and is one of two.
