A large 19th century oil on canvas depicting a girl Italian girl sitting by a fountain peeling an apple by the eminent French academic painter Jacques-Eugène Feyen (1815-1908). ‘La Fille à la Fontaine’ is signed by the artist and presented in a good quality giltwood neoclassical frame. In 1837 Jacques-Eugène Feyen began studying under Paul Delaroche at the École des Beaux-Arts. Between 1841 and 1882 he exhibited regularly at the Paris Salon and was awarded medals in 1866 and 1880. Among Feyen’s admirers was Vincent van Gogh who described him as "one of the few painters who pictures intimate modern life as it really is and does not turn it into fashion plates."
