James Craig Nicoll Paintings

American, 1846-1918

Noted marine painter and etcher James Craig Nicoll was born in New York City in 1846. He studied art under Mauritz F.H. de Haas, a well-known marine painter who worked for the Royal Dutch Court and as the official U. S. government artist of Admiral Farragut’s flagship during the Civil War. Nicoll was a prolific artist who worked in the luminist style during the 1860s and 1870s, and most often painted seascapes of the New England and Long Island coasts. From the 1880s on, he utilized a more muted, earthy palette. Nicoll exhibited New England seascapes as early as 1868 and regularly showed works that bear titles such as Rhode Island Coast, Near Point Judith, and Thatcher’s Island, Massachusetts. Nicoll also painted in Shrub Oak, Westchester County, New York, where he owned a weekend and summer home. In 1879, Nicoll taught etching to his good friend Kruseman Van Elten, also a noted marine painter.

In 1880, Nicoll was elected an associate of the National Academy, and he became a full Academician in 1885. From 1867 to 1900, Nicoll exhibited annually at the National Academy of Design. He also exhibited at the American Watercolor Society, American Fund Society, New York Etching Club, Artists’ Aid Society, New York Municipal Art Society, and the Century Association. His honors included medals from the Boston Museum of Fine Arts (1888), New Orleans Exposition (1885), American Art Association (1888), Atlanta Exposition (1895), and the Pan-American Exposition, Buffalo (1901). Nicoll’s paintings are housed in important public collections, including The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; Newark Museum, New Jersey; Mattatuck Museum, Woodbury, Connecticut; and the Smithsonian American Art Museum, Washington, D.C.

"Approach to Lee's Ferry" by Kim Whitesides, oil on canvas, 18 X 22 inches (Framed size: 21.5 x 25.5 inches) Whitesides made an impact in the art community at a very young age. While working as an illustrator in New York City from the late 60s through the mid 80s, his paintings appeared in many publications, including Time Magazine, Rolling Stone and Playboy. He received numerous awards from The Art Directors Club of New York and The Society of Illustrators. It was at this time that Whitesides began a period of bold work with the airbrush that emphasized the simplified spaces and clean lines of art deco and art moderne, for which he gained a national reputation. A native Utahn, Whitesides believes art is a language and an opportunity for his vision to inspire others. He continues to grow as an artist, as his art is constantly opening doors on new vistas...

Sawah Landscape

A sawah landscape, Sumatra Signed and dated 'Sonnega '54' (lower right), and annotated 'Voor Jan de Bas 1-1-1970 / R de Bas' (on the reverse) oil on canvas, 50,5x60,5 cm Provenance: - Collection Pieter de Bas (1909-1979) Mr de Bas was head of the MULO school and acting head of the HBS school in Medan. Thence by descent to the present owner. Exhibited: - Hotel de Boer, Medan 1954, where acquired by the first owner. The light I observed everywhere was of a special quality, fluorescent blue, shone from nowhere but radiated from every point, oddly with great depth and intensity. The light in an entirely different dimension came from nowhere and went nowhere shimmering with the glow of a bright blue jewel. The most important thing I discovered was of being omnipresent and able to understand everything at the same time, yes I could fathom creation completely. Auke Sonnega, born March 9, 1910 in Leeuwarden, known as the painter, primarily of young Balinese men and women. Originally raised in the reformed denomination, the parents of Auke apparently practised theosophy and their children, including Auke were taught these principles. The talent for drawing revealed itself at an early stage which in 1926 lead to a 4-year study of textile design at the Academy for Art and Craft in Amsterdam. He completed the academy in 1930 and worked in a carpet factory in Twente until 1934 and then followed in his sister Aafje’s footsteps leaving the Netherlands to go to the Dutch East Indies where in 1935 he started working as a graphic designer with an advertising bureau in Batavia. He was able to travel through Java and Bali on the motorbike that he brought with him from Europe, and was paid for his travelogue, enhanced with his own photo’s which appeared in several Dutch newspapers and magazines. In the 1930’s two Europeans, Walter Spies and Rudolf Bonnet...
