A beautifully understated pair of antique rush-seat chairs from Northern France, circa 1900. The frames have a deep ebonized finish that has been softened by decades of use into a lovely patina, with gentle wear along the edges revealing warm brown tones beneath the dark surface. The hand-woven rush seats add a natural, tactile counterpoint to the dark wood.
Design
The silhouette is classic Northern French country: slender proportions, gently arched back uprights, a wide curved top rail and a second back rail below it, all on a sturdy base with stretchers. These are honest, vernacular chairs, made for everyday use in farmhouses and village homes, and that simplicity is exactly what makes them so easy to combine with other furniture today.
