According to the Hermès Fall–Winter 1987–1988 Seasonal Scarf Booklet, the central composition combines an 1814 Hussar sabretache—a richly ornamented flat leather pouch traditionally suspended beside a cavalry saber—with the epaulette of an Imperial Guard lancer.
