“Boss Dog 1” by Sanuj Birla is a bold and characterful exploration of attitude, humour, and contemporary sculpture. Crafted from resin and fibreglass, the tabletop sculpture depicts an iconic British Bulldog standing upright on its hind legs, its forearms confidently crossed while holding a spiked bat. The exaggerated pose and instantly recognisable subject give the work a commanding presence, transforming the familiar canine figure into a playful symbol of confidence and authority.
Birla’s contemporary realist approach combines recognisable anatomy with a highly stylised sense of character. The Bulldog’s distinctive proportions and features are carefully modelled, while its human-like stance introduces an unexpected and humorous element. The smooth sculptural finish gives the figure a polished appearance, allowing its expressive silhouette and assertive posture to become central to the work’s visual identity.
The figure’s pose creates a strong sense of structure and personality. Standing vertically on its hind legs, the Bulldog forms a compact yet imposing silhouette, while the crossed forearms reinforce its self-assured attitude. The spiked bat introduces a contrasting diagonal element, adding visual tension to the composition and enhancing the sculpture’s mischievous, larger-than-life character.
Colour is central to the sculpture’s visual impact. Its sleek silver finish gives the figure a distinctly contemporary appearance, allowing light to move across the modelled surfaces and emphasise changes in volume and form. The restrained monochromatic palette also focuses attention on the Bulldog’s expression, posture, and sculptural details rather than distracting from them with additional colour.
The sculpture’s carefully finished surface encourages close observation of its texture and modelling. From the characteristic folds and contours of the Bulldog to the sharper detailing of the spiked bat, Birla combines smooth surfaces with more defined elements to create visual and tactile contrast. The reflective qualities of the silver finish further accentuate these details as the sculpture is viewed from different angles.
Yet “Boss Dog 1” is more than a contemporary representation of a British Bulldog. Through its anthropomorphic stance, crossed arms, and unexpected accessory, Birla gives the animal a distinctly human personality. Confidence and humour converge within the figure, turning the Bulldog into a playful character whose exaggerated authority invites both amusement and curiosity.
With its distinctive silhouette, sleek silver finish, and playful combination of realism and character, “Boss Dog 1” is a striking contemporary tabletop sculpture...
