Jo Taylor Vases and Vessels
British, b. 1970
Jo works in a variety of media on a large unrestrictive scale and her style is deliberately abstract with a bold use of colour. Her organic palette is scoured from the immediate landscape and the elements, reminiscent of the work of Prunella Clough and Graham Sutherland. Through her materials she describes muscle tensions and structures, which she was able to study during her residency at the Department of Veterinary Science at Liverpool University. This left Jo with an exceptional knowledge and understanding of animal physiology, leading The Times Art Critic Rachel Campbell Johnson to liken her use of anatomy to Stubbs.(Biography provided by Cross Gate Gallery)

Colonnade I is a unique handmade coloured stoneware ceramic sculptural vase in dusky pink and white by the British artist Jo Taylor. The central form has been thrown on the potter's wheel and also hand-built, then adorned with architectural inspired flourishes and swirls.
For Taylor, the making process hugely influences the final outcome of each piece. The way the raw material behaves and how it responds to her is intrinsic to the shapes & marks made. Clay pieces are made & marked with tools as the potter's wheel rotates until a collection of loops & curls of varying sizes are amassed. More clay is manipulated by hand to create further pieces with suggestions of direction.
When the clay has dried enough to be handled assembly begins, by adding & securing each piece whilst paying attention to the physical & aesthetic sense of balance. As the work evolves decisions are made regarding the composition from every angle until the work is complete.

Jaye Kim is a Korean-American artist living and working in Brooklyn, NY. Her ceramic work is an exploration of her interior world regarding the symbolism and rituals of motherhood. Depicting the mundane objects Kim interacts with daily in ginormous scale, from cups and saucers to skin care face masks and cabbages, the ordinary is transformed into the interpersonal. In her oversized hand built vessels, surface details derived from her coiling and pinching emerge to tell a story about our everyday domestic objects, highlighted by delicate lustres and stunning, saturated glaze work.
