Jo Taylor Vases and Vessels

British, b. 1970
Jo works in a variety of media on a large unrestrictive scale and her style is deliberately abstract with a bold use of colour. Her organic palette is scoured from the immediate landscape and the elements, reminiscent of the work of Prunella Clough and Graham Sutherland. Through her materials she describes muscle tensions and structures, which she was able to study during her residency at the Department of Veterinary Science at Liverpool University. This left Jo with an exceptional knowledge and understanding of animal physiology, leading The Times Art Critic Rachel Campbell Johnson to liken her use of anatomy to Stubbs.

Promenade V, a Unique Ceramic Sculptural Tall Vase in Porcelain by Jo Taylor
By Jo Taylor
Located in London, GB
'Promenade V’ is a unique porcelain sculpture by the British artist, Jo Taylor. Dramatic in scale Promenade V is a sheer triumph over the material employed. Known for being one of the most difficult ceramic bodies to work with, scale is always a challenge with porcelain and with this artwork, Taylor excels. Knowing her clay is everything, created in sections allows architectural scale whilst adding grog (pre-fired grains of clay) gives stability and strength. Adorned with her trademark flourishes adds glamourous movement throughout the piece. Taylor’s inspiration comes from highly decorative architectural features such as ornate plaster ceilings, wrought iron and carved stone. Living near the Georgian city of Bath (UK) provides a rich visual resource, although it can be said that she will seek out such details wherever she goes. Regular visits to our larger cities such as Liverpool (UK) and London (UK) offer ornament that can be experienced on a grander scale with their historic buildings such as the Sefton Park Palm House...

Colonnade I, a Unique Ceramic Sculptural Vase in Pink & White by Jo Taylor
By Jo Taylor
Located in London, GB
Colonnade I is a unique handmade coloured stoneware ceramic sculptural vase in dusky pink and white by the British artist Jo Taylor. The central form has been thrown on the potter's wheel and also hand-built, then adorned with architectural inspired flourishes and swirls. For Taylor, the making process hugely influences the final outcome of each piece. The way the raw material behaves and how it responds to her is intrinsic to the shapes & marks made. Clay pieces are made & marked with tools as the potter's wheel rotates until a collection of loops & curls of varying sizes are amassed. More clay is manipulated by hand to create further pieces with suggestions of direction. When the clay has dried enough to be handled assembly begins, by adding & securing each piece whilst paying attention to the physical & aesthetic sense of balance. As the work evolves decisions are made regarding the composition from every angle until the work is complete. Taylor’s inspiration comes from highly decorative architectural features such as ornate plaster ceilings, wrought iron and carved stone. Living near the Georgian city of Bath (UK) provides a rich visual resource, although it can be said that she will seek out such details wherever she goes. Large-Scale Ceramic Sculptural Cup & Saucer Vase Glazed in Glossy Blue & Teal
By Jaye Kim
Located in New York, NY
Large-scale Hand-Built Glazed Ceramic Sculpture, entitled 'Cup & Saucer' by Brooklyn-based artist and ceramicist Jaye Kim. This generously oversized cup and saucer is scaled up for maximum impact, and glazed in a glossy mix of exuberant teal and vibrant cobalt blue that emphasizes the drippy textured surface with a subtle sheen that catches the light. This work is composed of two separate pieces: the cup, and the saucer upon which it neatly sits. The cup can function as a vessel for an enormous bunch of flowers, a cachepot for a plant, or stand alone as a decorative object. With its monumental proportions, this piece brings a mega-size sense of whimsy to any setting. Artist Information: Jaye Kim is a Korean-American artist living and working in Brooklyn, NY. Her ceramic work is an exploration of her interior world regarding the symbolism and rituals of motherhood. Depicting the mundane objects Kim interacts with daily in ginormous scale, from cups and saucers to skin care face masks and cabbages, the ordinary is transformed into the interpersonal. In her oversized hand built vessels, surface details derived from her coiling and pinching emerge to tell a story about our everyday domestic objects, highlighted by delicate lustres and stunning, saturated glaze work. Jaye Kim is a graduated of the School of Visual Arts, where she studied animation. Her work has been shown at Egg Collective...
