John Carleton Wiggins Art

American, 1848-1932

John Carleton Wiggins was a pastoral landscape painter usually depicted with flocks of sheep or herds of cattle. He was born in Turner, Orange County, New York 1848 and raised in Brooklyn where he attended public schools and studied with George Inness. He studied at the National Academy of Design, but the Academy has no record of his attendance. However, their records do indicate that between 1866–80, he exhibited at the Academy's annual exhibitions. In 1890, he was elected as an Associate member of the National Academy, and made an Academician in 1906. Beginning 1880, Wiggins spent several years painting and studying in Europe and England, but was primarily in France, developing plein-air painting skills at Barbizon and Fontainebleau. These years influenced his subsequent style and subject matter as he changed from pure landscape painting to landscapes with broadly brushed images of cattle and sheep. He won a gold medal at the Paris Salon in 1894, and exhibited regularly at London's Royal Academy. He also studied in Holland. Returning to New York, he maintained a studio in Greenwich Village, and was influenced by John H. Cocks, a Brooklyn sculptor and landscape painter. By 1904, Wiggins moved his primary residence to Old Lyme, Connecticut, which had been the place he and his family had spent their summers. There he became a founder of the Old Lyme Art Colony, which grew to be a center of American Impressionism. Many of his paintings, with subtle lights and shadows, warm colors and soft edges, reflected his inspiration of the countryside of Old Lyme. It was a natural setting for artists, whose work like that of Wiggins, made obvious the influence of the French Barbizon painters. Carleton Wiggins also founded an art school in Old Lyme. His works can be seen in many collections and museums, including the National Gallery of Art, Lotus Club, Corcoran Gallery, Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the Art Institute of Chicago. Carleton Wiggins died in 1932, in Old Lyme, Connecticut.

Late 19th Century Tonalist Landscape -- Afternoon by the Pond
Located in Soquel, CA
Gorgeous tonalist oil painting woman walking in field by pond with home in background by Willis Seaver Adams (American, 1844-1921), circa 1880. Trees and an amazing sky in the background add depth and interest to this beautiful piece. Signed "W. S. Adams" lower right corner. Condition: Previous restoration includes relining of canvas. Frame is vintage gilt molded and wood frame and shows previous repair of molding losses. Image size: 20"H x 24"W. Auctions records for the artist exceed $6,000. Willis Seaver Adams was known for his landscapes of the Connecticut River Valley. A relative recluse for much of his artistic life, his loneliness can be seen in much of his works. Oil miniatures were the focus for almost all of his later works. He is credited with over 425 oils, watercolors, and drawings. Willis Seaver was born in 1844 on a farm in Suffield, near the Connecticut River. He intermittently attended the Suffield Academy, and always wanted to be a painter. A wealthy doctor became his patron, and financed his studies in 1868 at the Royal Academy in Antwerp. When the doctor passed away, Adams returned home and struggled to make a living painting. After working for a photographer for three years, he opened his own studio. Adams helped organize Cleveland's first watercolor exhibit in 1876. Soon thereafter, he completed a portrait of Rutherford B. Hayes, then governor of Ohio, prior to his becoming President of the United States. This portrait enhanced Adams notoriety. In 1878, Adams traveled to Italy where he opened a studio in Venice, and became friendly with neighbor James Whistler. Prior to returning to Springfield, Adams lived in Florence, Italy for three years. He returned to became an instructor for the Springfield Art Association, and began to exhibit his works at the galleries of James D. Gill. His first one-man exhibit was held there in 1894. Other successful exhibitions took place in Chicago, New York, and Boston. Although his works garnered respectable prices and reflected his success, Adams felt he was due more recognition. In 1906, he moved to Greenfield, Massachusetts and converted a barn into a studio. There, he fell into relative obscurity, accompanied mainly by his dog, Collie. In 1921, Adams passed away. Examples of Willis Adams works can be seen at the Kent Memorial Library, the Wadsworth Atheneum, and the Suffield Academy. Several Suffield residents are thought to own Adams paintings.

19th century English marine seascape, with fishing boats in the North Sea
Located in Woodbury, CT
William Thornley was a painter of coastal scenes whose work is very similar to Hubert and Charles Thornley, who may have been members of the same family. He painted scenes of genre, architecture, and landscapes as well. A number of the landscapes were of Belgium, Holland, Italy, and Norway. However, it is for his seascapes that he is best remembered. Thornley’s works are beautifully detailed and show a masterful understanding of the moods of both weather and sea. They are often small in size and put together with fine detail and great artistic merit. Thornley’s fishing scenes are spirited and similar in style to those of “Jock” Wilson, and are often painted in pairs. Thornley’s works have always been popular when they appear on the art market. He was believed to have first exhibited marines at the Royal Academy in 1859 from an address in Paddington, London and also at the British Institution from 1861 until it closed in 1867. He continued to exhibit at the Royal Academy until 1898. Thornley also exhibited at the Paris Salon and the Salon of French Artists, receiving an honorable mention in 1881 and a third-place medal in 1888. William Thornley also went by the names Georges William and William...

Barbizon Antique Landscape Oil Painting of Shepherd & Flock by Carleton Wiggins
By John Carleton Wiggins
Located in Shippensburg, PA
A complex and vivid panorama set in a Normandy forest, this fine painting depicts a Shepherd with his dog watching over a large flock of sheep as they stroll along a leafy path. Only brief patches of grass poke through the carpeted path while the twisting and knarled trunks of old growth wood rise around them. It is an overcast autumn day with a large portion of the trees having been emptied of leafage. The piece is heavily influenced by the Barbizon school with a certain heaviness often found in Dutch works of the same period. The warm colors, high chroma grasses and golden leaves are a striking juxtaposition against the achromatic sky and charcoal trees...
