John Charles Maggs Art

British, 1819-1895

John Charles Maggs was a well-known coaching scene painter who was born at 5 James Street, Bath in 1819. His father, James Maggs was an artist and furniture japanner and his uncle was a portrait painter. He studied in Italy for 2 years before returning to Bath, where he established himself as a painter and began to specialize in coaching scenes. Maggs ran a school of painting at his studio located at 34 Gay Street, known as the Bath Art Studio, where his daughter assisted him. Although he does not appear to have exhibited, he enjoyed great popularity during his lifetime winning important patrons such as Queen Victoria, the Duke of Beaufort and Joseph Grego. Maggs died at his home in Bath on 3rd November 1896 aged 77. The White Horse Cellar or Hatchetts White Horse Cellar was established around 1720 and became one of the best-known coaching inns during the 18th and 19th centuries. It was located at 155 Piccadilly and was the starting terminus for all western bound mail coaches from London.

By Abraham Hulk the Younger

Located in Hillsborough, NC

Late 19th/early 20th century oil on canvas painting in the manner of Abraham Hulk the Younger (1851-1922), and George Vincent (1796-1832). These artists painted in the Dutch style, though both are British. Each has had experience with Dutch masters that influence their work. George Vincent’s work is perhaps even closer to this than Hulk’s. Vincent paints the trees and skies with the warm hues of light infused on the work. Here, the sky has blue but also a khaki or tan shade, roughed into the blue and white. It is an unusual color in skies, yet Vincent shows us the light through clouds casting a darker shade. The trees are varied greens but also have yellowed leaves, as in autumn. Presented in a period decorative gilt frame, the painting is of a cottage in a woodland with cattle by a pond, a little black dog and man and a woman standing by. In the distance is a glimpse of a river and grasses, framed by trees and an overcast sky. Hulk is renowned for his treatment of the changing season from summer to autumn, and the golden leaves and fading greens in this painting suggest this changing time of year. Hulk is the son of a well known Dutch maritime...

John Charles Maggs British, (1819-1896) The Christopher Hotel Oil on canvas, signed & titled ‘Bath’ Image size: 13.5 inches x 25.5 inches Size including frame: 21 inches x 33 inches A busy coaching scene set outside the Christopher Hotel on Bath High Street by John Charles Maggs. As the stage coach pulls up, a mail guard sounds the coaching horn to signal the arrival of the mail coach. Maggs painted a number of coaching scenes based in Bath including this fine example. The Christopher Hotel was one of many inns that sprang up after the London-Bath stage coach route was opened. The first regular stage coach from London to Bath started in 1667 running 3 times a week, with a daily service beginning in 1711. On Monday 2 August, 1784, the first mail-coach in England set out between London and Bristol, stopping at Bath and provided a quicker and safer way of transporting mail as well as passengers. The Bath Road, (A4) was the main road linking Bristol and London and it took 2 days for passengers to travel between Bath and London. The Christopher Hotel dates from the Georgian period around 1730 and possibly earlier and was situated near to the Roman Baths and the Victoria Art Gallery. During the late 1800’s, Bath Rugby Club...
