A wonderful coaching scene set outside the Saracen’s Head in Broad Street, Bath by John Charles Maggs. An innkeeper can be seen waiting for the arrival of a stagecoach whilst passers-by look on. The Saracens Head was one of a number of coaching inns that sprang up after the London-Bath stage coach route was opened. It dates from around 1713 and is one of the oldest pubs in the city still in operation today. A booklet about Gloucestershire, dated 1788, reported that a post coach ran from the Saracens Head to Gloucester every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday morning at 6am. In 1818, a local commercial directory listed a number of coaching services that ran from the Saracens Head including the London Regulator Light Coach. Charles Dickens is reputed to have stayed at the inn whilst writing his novel Pickwick Papers. On the right can be seen the church of St Michaels in its earlier form prior to being rebuilt in 1835.
The first regular stage coach from London to Bath started in 1667 running 3 times a week, with a daily service beginning in 1711. On Monday 2 August, 1784, the first mail-coach in England set out between London and Bristol, stopping at Bath and provided a quicker and safer way of transporting mail as well as passengers. The Bath Road, (A4) was the main road linking Bristol and London and it took 2 days for passengers to travel between Bath and London. By the mid-18th century, England was crisscrossed with coach routes, and hundreds of inns were spread out at seven to 10-mile stages across the land. Coaching inns provided refreshment, lodging, and fresh horses for weary travellers.
John Charles Maggs was a well-known coaching scene painter who was born at 5 James Street, Bath in 1819. His father, James Maggs was an artist and furniture japanner and his uncle was a portrait painter. He studied in Italy for 2 years before returning to Bath where he established himself as a painter and began to specialise in coaching scenes.
He ran a school of painting at his studio located at 34 Gay Street, known as the Bath Art Studio, where his daughter assisted him. Although he does not appear to have exhibited he enjoyed great popularity during his lifetime winning important patrons such as Queen Victoria, the Duke of Beaufort and Joseph Grego. He died at his home in Bath on 3 November 1896 aged 77.
Presentation: The work is housed in its original gilt frame which is in excellent condition.

The White Horse Cellar or Hatchetts White Horse Cellar was established around 1720 and became one of the best-known coaching inns during the 18th and 19th centuries. It was located at 155 Piccadilly and was the starting terminus for all western bound mail coaches from London.

A superb Scottish landscape painting of Highland Sheep at the head of Glen Coe by William Watson. The sheep and their lambs are depicted grazing in the morning light with the dramatic mountains beyond. Glen Coe is a valley located in the Highlands to the North of the county of Argyll and close to the province of Lochaber. The area, which became infamous for the Massacre of Glencoe is one of Scotland’s most scenic Highland glens.
William Watson was born in Islington in 1847, the son of the London miniature painter William John Watson (1810-1871) and his wife Caroline (née Butcher). His brothers Charles Watson (1837-1900) and Robert Watson (1855-1921) were also artists. His father seems to have travelled around and after spending time in Brighton, the family moved to Bransford Road in Worcester during the early part of the 1860’s.
As well as being taught by his father, Watson received his early training in the studio of Sir Francis Grant PRA (1803-1878). He later became a pupil of Sir Edwin Henry Landseer RA (1802-1873) and Rosa Bonheur (1822–1899). Both Landseer and Bonheur had a great influence on his work and he began specialising in scenes of cattle and sheep. By 1866 he had become a full time artist and began exhibiting at the Royal Society of British Artists.
Perhaps to take advantage of the inspiring scenery, Watson moved to Birkenhead, Cheshire where in 1871 he met and married Eleanor Davies who was from Caernarvonshire.
