John Fery Art
American, 1859-1934
John Fery (1859 - 1934) studied art in Vienna, Düsseldorf, and Munich. He conducted hunting expeditions to the Pacific Northwest for wealthy Europeans before settling in the United States in 1886. He lived for various lengths of time in Salt Lake City, Utah, Arizona, California, Minnesota, Oregon, Washington, and Wisconsin.
While traveling and painting in the Rocky Mountains, Fery impressed members of the Hill family, developers of the Great Northern Railway Company, who hired him to paint pictures dramatizing the beauties of the region. Many of the more than three-hundred works he completed hung in station houses, hotels, and lodges served by the railroad.
The Great Northern Railway Company was not only an important patron for Fery and other artists, but as has been noted by William Gerdts in Art Across America: Two Centuries of Regional Painting 1710-1920 and others, its stations and hotels served in a real sense as the first "art galleries" in the West, at a time before traditional art institutions were even envisioned in the region.
Since that time, arts institutions in the West have grown in number and prominence. Among the many holding examples of Fery's work are the National Museum of Wildlife Art in Jackson, Wyoming, the Charles M. Russell Museum in Great Falls, Montana, the Boise Art Museum, and the Museum of History and Industry in Seattle.
Fery settled on Orcas Island, Washington in 1929, only to see his studio and much of his work destroyed the same year by fire. He died in Everett, Washington in 1934.to

Provenance:
Private Collection, New York
Born in Austria, John Fery earned a strong reputation for dramatic paintings of western mountain landscape in the United States. Glacier National Park in northwest Montana was a popular subject for him.
He was raised in a prominent, wealthy family that lived on an estate about nineteen miles northeast of Salzburg. His mother was Hungarian, and his father was born in Bohemia. S ome sources have written that he studied art in Dusseldorf, Germany with Peter Jansen, and also in Munich, Venice and Karlsruhe. But his "name does not appear in the records of the major art schools in any of these places, nor is there any record of his name at either the Vienna or Budapest academies." (Merrill 26) It is possible, however, that he received private instruction, and because of the sophistication of his painting, sources think it unlikely that he was self taught.
An early interest in wilderness scenery led him to painting American landscapes and hunting scenes. In the mid 1880s, he came to America and lived in the German community in Milwaukee, and then in 1886, brought his family to the United States. His wife, Mary Rose Kraemer (1862-1940), was born in Switzerland, and they had one child born near Munich and two others born in the United States. From 1886 to 1888, they lived in New York, and by 1890, Fery had made his first trip West.
He visited Yellowstone Park in 1891, and indicated in his writings that he had been there even earlier. From 1892 to 1893, he led European nobility on hunting expeditions to the American Northwest, made possible by the completion of the Northern Pacific Railroad...

Hudson River School Large American Impressionist Landscape Wisconsin in the Snow
Located in Cotignac, FR
A large scale American Hudson River School Impressionist landscape of a snow scene, most probably Wisconsin, by Leroy Ferdinand Jonas. The painting is signed and dated bottom right and presented in a fine gilt frame.
An imposing view of a snowy landscape most probably the artist's native Wisconsin. Jonas has captured the grandeur of the scene with the contrast between the thick lush snow and the rich colours of the foliage and leaves on the trees. His impasto technique is very characteristic of the American Impressionists as is the subject and sense of scale. A really beautiful painting which because of its scale would be a statement piece in any room.
LeRoy Jonas was born in the town of Texas, Marathon County, Wisconsin, on April 18, 1897, son of Johann F. and Marie (Borchardt) Jonas. He was educated in Wausau public schools and attended the Chicago Art Institute, where he studied under John Norton, noted for his murals, Leopold Seifert, noted for his portraits, and William Wilmovsky, a landscape artist. He worked as a commercial artist and Conservator of Fine Arts there. Upon graduating, he painted for a while in Door County, Wisconsin and was then awarded a scholarship to study under Leon Lundmark...

In the Afterglow (Contemporary Atmospheric Landscape Color Field Painting)

Acclaimed artist of the Hudson Valley, Jane Bloodgood, takes her painting to a new level with a new work entitled "In the Afterglow". Her interpretation of this very iconic view (observed from the top of Olana, the historic home of Frederic Church located near Hudson, NY) is set during the very quiet moments of a summer's evening when the sun has dipped beyond the mountains. The crystal blue sky illuminates with the sun's setting rays; a golden band of yellow haze otherwise known as "The Venus Belt" is an atmospheric phenomenon only visible shortly before sunrise or right before sunset. The water reflects the pink and purple glow that forms near the horizon; the dusty shadows of trees tower over the water's edge. We marvel at how simply Jane captures a complex phenomenon, evidence of her unparalleled ability to paint light and endow her work with luminosity. Yet this painting succeeds not only in its representation of the actual landscape and the awe produced by the experience, but also in its contemporary abstraction of atomsphere. The big, open blue sky is stacked with the colors of the sunset against the horizon, calling to mind a Rothko or the other great color field painters who achieve mood and depth from singular color.
About the work:
Painter Jane Bloodgood-Abrams has become one of the area’s most celebrated artists, gracing viewers with her compositions of sky, river, and earth. Being less concerned with documenting specific scenes, Bloodgood-Abrams is focused on capturing nature’s essence, “the deeply profound moments, where there is a connection to a vital energy.” Her process begins with being in nature, where she allows the emotional energy of the landscape to filter through her psyche. The memory is then translated onto canvas after being worked over a period of time with layers of paint that is applied, wiped away, and reworked. The result is a radiantly dramatic remembrance of Bloodgood-Abram’s encounter with “something beyond everyday life”. The artist’s final hope is for these images to evoke remembrances within the viewer's own personal relationship with nature.
Artist Biography:
Jane Bloodgood Abrams was born in Queens, New York. She received her Bachelor’s of Fine Arts from the College of Saint Rose in Albany, in 1985. Three years later, she earned a Master’s of Fine Arts at the State University of New York in New Paltz. Now she paints in the Hudson River Valley and the Berkshires.
