A very nice and super rare "The Surfer" magazine reprint from 1973 of the original "Surfer Magazine" published in 1960 by surf industry pioneer John Severson. The piece is in good condition with light creasing to cover; stress marks to spine; light foxing and shelf-wear to back cover; all pages / staples are intact and secure. The magazine measures 11"W x 8.5"H. Super cool piece of surf history! #3176 JOHN SEVERSON John Severson, well known as the creator of the internationally acclaimed SURFER Magazine, grew up surfing off the beaches of Southern California. He began his career as a painter, selling his first works while finishing his Master’s Degree at Long Beach State College. In the ’50s he became the first person to create a large body of art relating to the Hawaii-California surf culture. Since then he has provided a steady output of oil paintings, watercolors, drawings, and prints. In 1958, John used his art, photography, and surfing passion to create a popular surf movie series. His films included SURF SAFARI, SURF FEVER, BIG WEDNESDAY, and PACIFIC VIBRATIONS. Severson's smash hits posters from the ’50s and ’60s, remain collector favorites. As a surfer, Severson was known for riding big waves, and for his innovative performance style in big surf. In 1961, he won the Peru International Surfing Championships and was a finalist in the U.S. and Hawaiian Championships. With the founding of SURFER, John’s art focused on the magazine and graphics. Dynamic layered blue & red abstract acrylic painting on canvas by the Late Midwestern Artist John Link, mounted in a wood frame. This work, entitled "Temporary Ephedrine", is one of several large Link pieces available exemplifying his technique of richly layering tones of acrylic paint using an alkyd spirit resin. Link detailed this process: “The medium is indeed "acrylic" but not what most people mean by acrylic - which is waterborne acrylic. Instead this is acrylic resin dissolved in turps, with a dash of alkyd resin thrown in to stabilize it so the next layers of paint do not re-dissolve it. Thus it does not muddle up like repeated layers of watercolor can. This stuff does not yellow either, like oil, and a glass of it looks like a glass of water, it is that clear, thus preserving the intensity of the pigment. Also, because it is clear when wet, there is no "pastel effect" like you get with waterborne acrylic, where you must let a glaze dry before you see what you have. It is WYSIWYG to the core."
