Jörg Pietschmann Stools

German

Jörg Pietschmann creates sculptural furniture and decor from the hardwood that is native to the region where his workshop is based in Hamburg. His hand-carved walnut benches and coffee tables, with their gnarled tops and natural edges, make for a guaranteed focal point in any living room, while his oak vases and centerpieces have a rustic yet elegant appeal, and feature the knots and cracks that characterized the surfaces of the material it was still in the forest.

Pietschmann works with local timber like poplar, maple and beech, as well as exotic lumber found on his travels. Each piece tells a story of the landscape from which it came.

Pietschmann's love of carving and nature began as a young boy in the countryside of East Germany. He always carried a pocket knife to whittle pieces of wood, and he recalls being artistically inspired by the ruins of the area's abandoned manor houses. As he grew older, Pietschmann's design influences also expanded to include the decorative objects and architecture of ancient cultures like the Egyptians, Vincas, Mayas and the Aztecs. Pietschmann's modern design influences include master woodworkers George Nakashima, Wharton Esherick, Alexander Noll and Sam Maloof.

Before he begins working on a tree trunk, Pietschmann tries to get a feel for what kind of sculpture or object it will be. For every tree, the sculptor strives to preserve its unique character, which means that no two resulting pieces are alike (and no resin, metal or lacquer is used in his process). He follows the form and curves of each piece of wood, allowing the piece to take shape as he works. A final coat of oil renders prominent the striking grain and natural warmth of the material.

Pietschmann has exhibited his work in Europe and in the United States. He lives and works in Germany.

"Chaises Basses" Low Chairs by Charles Dudouyt, France 1930s
By Charles Dudouyt
Located in Utrecht, NL
Turned chairs — sometimes called thrown chairs or spindle chairs — represent a style of Elizabethan or Jacobean turned furniture that had a vogue in late 16th and early 17th century England, New England and Holland. The technique was carried on to the 20th century and was widespread in Europe as well, where craftsmen created durable pieces for various interiors and purposes. These chairs were designed by French designer, Charles Dudouyt, who originally created this pair of small carved chairs as ‘fireside’ chairs, hence the “chaises basses...

Charlotte Perriand Berger Wood Stool by Cassina
By Charlotte Perriand, Cassina
Located in Barcelona, Barcelona
Stool model Berger designed by Charlotte Perriand in 1953-61. Relaunched by Cassina in 2011. Manufactured by Cassina in Italy. Reclaiming simple materials and basic shapes, with an eye to architecture and mountain life, led to the creation of two historic design low table-stools inspired respectively by the milking stool used by mountain shepherds in the French town much loved by the author. Placed individually or in lively arrangements, the two low tables bring the pleasing lightness of solid wood to indoor settings emphasized by the continuity of the grain between the top and the edges and the countless natural variations in the wood. Each piece is made of unique solid wood, so every piece will be different from one another and not exactly as the one on the photos. Both pieces are inspired by the mountains. While the latter takes its name from the milking-stool used by alpine shepherds, the former is inspired by the French locality much loved by designer and architect Charlotte Perriand. These furnishing accessories stand out for the honesty of their simple shapes and for the concrete expression of their materials and function. The turned seat meets the stylised legs both in the Tabouret...
